Caritas India’s constant efforts to reach out to the Dalit and Tribal communities through programmes and partners across the country have ushered in boosted self-worth and confidence among the two socially excluded communities. With people led approaches grounded on the constitutional principles of social justice and human rights, the work with Dalits and Tribals have largely focussed on strengthening their agency, participation in decision making in local governance, educational empowerment, awareness generation and linkages with public schemes and services, livelihood sustainability and overall wellbeing by providing much needed services and handholding to various vulnerable groups among the Dalits and Tribals.

Under the “Operation Basera”, a campaign to provide legal rights to homestead land under the Homestead Act (up to 10 cents) 33,749 Mahadalit families were supported in applying for the homestead land. Young people, focusing Mushara girl children both school drop outs and early married were covered under targeted literacy programmes.
