TIMELINE: March 2012 –Feb 2014

Caritas India supported the Justice Venture and sustainable peace building initiative in Kandhamal district in Odisha after the communal riot broke out in 2008. With the objective of facilitating recovery for restarting their lives, the riot affected victims and survivors were handheld in securing the legal documents they had lost to the riot, and compensation for the losses suffered.

Impact

  • Conviction secured in three cases wherein 26 convicts were awarded rigorous imprisonment and fine, while the court pronounced judgements in 11 cases facilitated under the initiative, with a total of 53 cases that were supported through the legal process.
  • 43 village level legal aid camps were conducted through which 2091 people were made aware of their entitlements and legalities of approaching the court, filling petitions, applying for the re-issue of lost documentation.
  • 24 riot affected families were able to access legal aid services, resulting in 208 victims filing application before the competent authorities.
  • The legal awareness camps enabled 54 families to file applications before the competent authorities for securing homestead land. 15 homestead land related cases were settled with families gaining land titles during the programme period.
  • Of the 204 applicants facilitated to for re-issue of legal documents lost to the riot, 100 families could obtain the legal documents.
