Meet the women fighting corruption at Anganwadi centre, Munger

Paro Devi never imagined that she would ever raise her voice against corrupt Anganwadi worker to safeguard the rights of children and pregnant women. Being the Mata Samiti (Mother’s collectives) leader of the Musahar community in Munger, has learned about the provisions, rights, and entitlement under Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) from Caritas India Roshni Programme.

Roshni works for the children of 1-14 years, pregnant and lactating mothers belonging to the musahar community to have improved access to quality education as per Right to Education (RTE) norms along with improved nutrition through linkages with local health facilities.

Biranji village in Munger has only one Anganwadi centre for 50 children. Sulekha Devi, the Anganwadi worker is the in charge of the centre who caters to the children below 5 years. It was reported by the community that the nutritional support allotted for socially and economically backward women is irregular. The misuse of funds for children (dress facility) was also reported.

Paro discussed the matter with Mata Samiti members and submitted written complaints against the Anganwadi Worker to the local Child Development Project Officer (CDPO). The complaints were investigated and Sulekha Devi was found guilty for misusing the funds and materials. CDPO warned Sulekha and instructed to be accountable and sincere in her dealings. It was a small victory in the fight against the fund and maternal misuse rampant against the successful implementation of RTE.

Now, children, pregnant and lactating women are getting their due entitlements. This is a classic case of women empowerment who challenged the authorities and demanded her rights for the wellbeing of children and women.

The step has boosted the confidence of the Mushar community and they had started demanding their rights.

The realization started griping among Musahar community to be aware of and rise against injustice. This incident has eventually developed their self-confidence and leadership quality.

Roshni is the only force and stimulating drive to push the women forward and fight for their rights. The staffs of Roshni were instrumental in facilitating the members to understand the process and supported the community to draft applications.
