Nirmala Nivas
                       – a home away from home for 42 tribal villages in Hazaribagh district.

Nirmala Nivas, Patratu in Hazaribagh diocese

For the girls and boys of 42 villages in the 8 panchayats, namely, Patratu, Hapua, Palani, Koto, Terpa, Gogodtha, Salgo, Omendada and Bhawani – Nirmala Nivas is a home away from home.

The 120 children who are presently studying in this hostel belong to the following tribes – Uraon, Munda, Santhal and Khadia. As the inhabitants of these villages are small and marginal farmers, the literacy level is pretty low. While the economic condition as well as the distance of the school works adversely in promoting education, Nirmala nivas comes as a boon to the area.

Sr. Josephine belonging to Congregation of the Immaculate Conception has facilitated the setting up of Nirmala Nivas with the assistance of Caritas India. The hostel is constructed in an area of 3,150 sq. feet. It has 2 dormitories – study room – box room – store room – kitchen and sick room. The hostel can accommodate a total of 150 children.

Besides enjoying a comfortable accommodation at this hostel, the children would benefit from sound education and value formation to emerge as good citizens of this country, says Sr.Josephine. An important policy of Nirmala Nivas is also to inculcate in the minds of the young an appreciation for their rich culture and local art forms, so that they will learn to their preserve their positive culture and traditions. “Nirmala Nivas will play a role in empowering the tribal girls of the area” – testifies Sr. Josephine.
