Livelihood Restoration

Vulnerabilities fading out
Secure livelihoods restore normalcy

Fisher folk of the peninsular India are amongst the poorest people in the region. Though they are the ones who manage the shoreline, mangroves and coastal fishing zones i.e. the health of the oceans; but they are ones most neglected. After tsunami many are fearful of returning to the sea. Caritas India extended support to these fisher folks by restoration of their livelihoods, and re-equipping them for sustainable fishing. Apart from ensuring that they have a fair share in the market, Caritas India is making efforts to enable them to ensure future safety at sea and disaster preparedness measures.
Livelihood Restoration includes:
Provision of Boats, Engines, Nets, Vocational Training, Cash for work with the integration of community mobilization and Self Help Group Formation.

Significant Perspectives of
Community Based Livelihood Support
* Deserving families are selected, that is, those who have lost their livelihood equipments and have not received any compensation
* 4 families are made joint owners of livelihood assets; with an agreement. They are registered with the Fisheries Department
* Self Help groups have been formed, helping the members to avail small loans with their own savings for repair / maintenance of their livelihood equipments. In a span of 2 years, these SHGs would be linked directly with the Bank for credit facilities required for purchase of new boats or nets or engines, etc.
* 25% of the total cost on the assets is to be repaid in 36 installments to the Village Development Council through self help groups thus helping the youth and women for their income generation program.
* Boats and engines are insured, premium on insurance of boats and engines is paid by the joint owners of the boat through self help groups
* Life insurance of the Joint Owners to enable their families to have financial support and assistance done.
* Men folk in many villages have come forward to get insured under Group insurance scheme of LIC called Janashree Bima Yojana.
