Tsunami Relief

The Tsunami of Dec. 26, 2004 has been an unprecedented disaster in history, which has now turned out to be a major humanitarian relief and restoration operation of governments, non-governmental organisations and other philanthropic
organizations.

Caritas India along with Caritas Internationalis Network, CRS, and the 22 local counterparts in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu - Pondicherry, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, executed a major relief, restoration and permanent rehabilitation
programme to "re-build the shattered homes & lives" better than they had been, prior to the Tsunami. ECHO Humanitarian Aid Office is also partnering with Caritas in the Tsunami response.

Our Global Response
Immediate Relief by way of cooked food, dry ration, clothes, mosquito nets, kitchen utensils and other needed means for storing water, etc. reached 90,000 families (approximately, 400,000 affected population) in the 3 affected states and 2 Union Territories.

Children and Tsunami: At the request of the tribal council, thousands of children were provided adequate nourishment under Operation Karuna Sagar-a joint operation of ACANI - CRS & Caritas India. All the partners focused on the needs of the children. In the Tsunami affected areas, 45,768 children were provided school books and 72,284 received play materials. About 300 activity centers are organized for child care; and more
importantly, psycho-social support to bring them out of the traumatic disorders is also being addressed. Child-to-child assistance was facilitated through training of 'guardian angels' by some of our partners in South India.
