Unconditional Cash support provides greater dignity to Cyclone Amphan survivors

Noor Mohammaed stares out at the broken wall of his house, the bamboos supporting the walls are now missing and there are many holes surfaced on the roof. After 25 days of the cyclone, the house was destroyed in the Amphan Cyclone.

He evacuated his house with his family as soon he received the early warning of the cyclone and moved to a safer cyclone shelter home where they stayed together with other 25 families in one room. The question of social distancing can not be thought off when so many people stay in a single room. All stayed there for 20-25 days and NGO people and Gram Panchayat helped them with some dry food and cooked food.

Noor (35), a person with a disability living with his wife and 3 daughters in his village. The trauma of losing his only house was immense as the family has no roof over their head and his wife is expecting.

‘I had no money to take my pregnant wife to the doctor’, says Noor Mohammed Khan. The anxiety of taking care of his daughters and wife is constantly troubling him.

Caritas India with the support of European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid intervened in the area and prioritised the support to the most marginalsed section of the society including single woman, Separated/divorced, Widow/ Widower, Tiger widow, Persons with a disability, elderly with no one to take care of them, internally displaced households, returnee migrants, returnee trafficked persons, etc. Affected by the cyclone. These selected beneficiaries are supported with Food, Water, Sanitation & Hygiene, Shelter, Non Food Items, Unconditional and conditional Cash Transfer.

Noor was supported with the unconditional cash transfer to take care of family health, education, food, shelter and other needs. The support has helped him to repair his damaged house with wood, bamboo and tarpaulin.

“Caritas India has helped us to get a roof when we are in dire need of Shelter to stay with my wife and my daughter. Since the rainy season has already started. With the help of Caritas India now we are in a safe shelter. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to our Caritas India for their wonderful and timely support towards very poor and marginalized communities like me”, says Noor Mohammed. He also mentioned that the support has helped to take his wife to doctor and buy medicine for her and food for the children.

“Now we as a family living very peacefully because of Caritas India“, concludes his dialogue proudly.
