Mahatma Gandhi wrote the story of Independence through or Charkha or spinning wheel. Creation of financial liberty for every citizen was one of the objectives behind using a spinning wheel. It is a symbolic synonym of self-reliance, perseverance, and determination. The theory stands relevant today when rural people are working their way towards “Atamnirbhar” (Self-Reliance).
Question of Self-reliance became the key for many who are still looking forward for their livelihood. Manorama Devi from Sheikhpura, Bihar fought her way out to earn her livelihood for the family. She can now earn Rs.1200- Rs.1500 per month by sewing Cloths and thin mattress.
“Today I feel that I am not only contributing to my family, but I am able to make myself more skilled which will help me in sustain livelihood. Earlier, I was only sewing the torn cloths and now I am sewing thin mattress made of cloths and many more,” says Manorama.
Before pursuing this livelihood option, she used to work as a farmworker in the agriculture field to contribute to the family income. Her husband used to work in the city as a worker but after the outbreak of pandemic and cessation of every economic activity, he lost his job. After returning back to the village, the situation became precarious due to no work and the family was in utter destitute.
For a few days, the family worked in Mahama Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) and in Construction sites to manage their household needs. These measures were not sufficient, and the family was looking for some sustainable source of income.
Caritas India through her SAKSHAM project supported Manorama Devi with Sewing Machine under COVID realignment programme to support migrant families in rebuilding their economic activities locally. While assessing the skill and Interest of the Individuals, she showed her interest in establishing one small shop for sewing clothes for the promotion of livelihood.
In Month of September 2020, the machine was supported by BWDS followed by a short training on operating the machine. With the machine in her hand, she started sewing clothes and thin mattress. This has helped in living a healthy life with a sustainable income.
Now she is not going out for labour and runs her small business to moving towards “Atamnirbhar. Her husband also started Lease farming by taking land on lease.
The vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan or Self-reliant India has started taking shape through these small initiatives of rural entrepreneurship which strengthens rural livelihood and economy.
