The people of Panchmukhi village have seen a lot of challenges in their lives. The village falls on the flood-prone area. They had also seen the extreme poverty but beyond all this, they have witnessed is the devastation caused by the flood.
In 2017, the flood has destroyed the standing crops, infrastructure, and livestock. The Flood has caused heavy damages to the old concrete structure’s, PCC roads and Community Hall. 200 Families from Panchmukhi village ward no. 04 of West Champaran District in Bihar are majorly engaged in agriculture and other allied activities for livelihood. The canal bridge, which used to connect one part of the village to other was washed away in the deluge. After the flood, villagers had a major concern of crossing the canal as their agriculture field, and all the basic facilities were on the other side of the canal.
The village is under the Caritas India Saksham project which promotes Socio-economic and political empowerment through the People Led Approach (PLA). Over the years the project has worked to strengthen the awareness and realization on rights and entitlements by facilitating an increase in the active participation of the communities in different government offices.
The empowered villagers took this matter into their hands and constructed the Bamboo Bridge (Chachari) through the community contribution. The village people contributed the Bamboo’s and the Farmers group members along with other villagers constructed the Bridge in 04 days. But uncertain and heavy rain of 2019 put a lot of pressure on the bridge leading to its collapse. The absence of the bridge has stopped the mobility, health services, livelihood opportunities and farmers have to take the long way through adjoining villages to reach their field through tractors, and trollies.
The Farmer Group developed the plan for Construction of 02 Culverts (bridge) and 1 Community in Ward Sabha Planning which was integrated with the village development plan of the panchayats. While presenting, the members of farmers group raised their demand for the construction of concrete Culvert to use during all sessions. The process was led by Farmers group well accompanied by Villagers.
In 2020 assembly election, the administration was taking peoples’ concerns and trying to find ways in the satisfying community. In the election year, the plan was sanctioned under the Chief minister dream project ‘Sat Nishchay Yojna’ and the work completed in January 2021.
Ghanshyam Rishi Member of Farmer’s group of Panchmukhi Village happily shared the effort of, Farmer’s group, local people and panchayat in constructing culvert. “As the Culvert is constructed, it will become convenient to cross safely. It would save our time and energy and ensure safety”
