Caritas India’s Humanitarian Response Offers Lifeline to Flood-Hit Kalimpong and Sikkim

As the specter of disaster loomed over the serene landscapes of Kalimpong and Sikkim, Caritas India swiftly sprung into action, extending its compassionate hand to the flood-stricken communities. The deluge, triggered by the Teesta River’s tumultuous rise following a Glacial Lake outburst in Sikkim on October 4th, left in its wake a trail of devastation.

Nearly 60,000 individuals bore the brunt of nature’s fury, but amid the chaos, Caritas India, with unwavering support from START Network and Siemens India, emerged as a hope for over 1500 households spanning approximately 13 affected villages.

In Kalimpong, the efforts began by reaching out to 605 families, delivering vital hygiene kits that brought a glimmer of relief to their lives. The initiatives supported by START Network have proven invaluable, with more than 200 households in Sikkim and Kalimpong receiving Unconditional Fund Assistance of Rs. 5000 through direct bank transfers. These funds are not just financial relief but a lifeline, helping families clear the siltation in their homes and meet other pressing needs.

Our dedicated team didn’t stop at immediate relief; we recognized the importance of bolstering local capabilities for a resilient future. On November 1st, a comprehensive program orientation and capacity-building session unfolded, featuring 22 participants, including Project Executing Agencies (PEAs), community mobilizers, and volunteers. This training equipped our team with the essential knowledge of Core Humanitarian Standards, organization Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and program components. This investment in knowledge reinforced our commitment to delivering aid that truly makes a difference.

Looking forward, our sights are set on a resilient future. Caritas India has initiated assessments in Kalimpong and the Toong Naga GPU areas of Sikkim. Through a series of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and interviews, we aim to gain insight into the long-term needs of the affected communities. This ensures that our response is not just immediate but also comprehensive and tailored to the specific requirements of those we serve. As we continue our journey of relief and recovery, Caritas India remains unwavering in its dedication to being a pillar of support for the communities we are privileged to serve.
