Known for its maximum rainfall, richest botanical habitats, and biodiversity, Meghalaya the ‘abode of clouds’ was considered as one of the wettest places on the planet. Those days of abundance and richness are slowly fading away.
The changing climate and urbanization have created widespread implications for agriculture, water resources, forests, and biodiversity on human and animal health. Traditional farming in been replaced by cash crops coupled with unsustainable use of natural resources.
The change in soil and land has brought major changes in the agricultural practices, cropping system, and food consumption patterns, gave emergence to a new food system, and exposed farmers and consumers to the precariousness of the market, all of which have both long- and short-term food security implications.
Amidst these uncertainties, a few Indigenous farmers have kept the hope alive with their traditional knowledge – which is been promoted to regain the food and nutrition sovereignty in Meghalaya. Ms. Silbina Shangpliang from Laitlawsnai village in South West Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya is one such dedicated and hardworking farmer.
Silbina possesses a vast knowledge of traditional farming systems and has been promoting the same for ages. Agriculture is her family’s main income source and depends on it to fulfil various necessities. She uses around half an acre of cultivatable land, continuously maintaining the quality of soil fertility to cultivate different crops and vegetables. Because of her expertise in the knowledge of traditional farming, she also enrolled herself as the Master Trainer under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) for the area of Mawthong.
Caritas India under the FARM Northeast programme recognizes the vital role of traditional farming methods in achieving nutritional food security and sovereignty. The program empowers farming communities and fosters a sustainable approach to agriculture. Shangpliang’s involvement reflects the program’s commitment to preserving indigenous farming practices while integrating modern skills acquired through workshops and training sessions.
Adopting the principles of organic farming, Shangpliang’s dedication to promoting nutritional food for a healthy life is evident in her cultivation of around 16 varieties of agricultural products. Her holistic approach extends beyond traditional crops, encompassing the planting of fruit saplings, livestock rearing, and fish farming. This comprehensive strategy not only ensures a diverse and nutritious food supply but also aligns with the FARM Northeast program’s objective of encouraging sustainable farming practices for long-term food security.
Ms. Shangpliang’s journey exemplifies the success of Caritas India’s efforts in revitalizing traditional farming systems and fostering a resilient and self-sufficient agricultural community. With an income of approximately Rs. 1,25,000/- annually, Shangpliang adopted an Integrated Farming System (IFS) on her half-acre land, optimizing space for a Kitchen Garden, livestock, and an orchard. This approach not only enhanced her family’s income but also showcased a model for sustainable agriculture. Recognizing her dedication, the Nongstoin Social Service Society (NSSS) provided her with a Vermicomposting Demo Unit, further contributing to her efforts in promoting safe and healthy farming practices.
Embracing the principles of food sustainability and security, Shangpliang’s efforts gained admiration from Ms. Roselin Mary Lyngdoh Marshilong, the Field Program Associate under FARM NE. Roselin expressed delight in the cooperative spirit of the community, highlighting the positive impact of activities conducted under the FARM Northeast programme. Today, Ms. Shangpliang stands as a beacon of success, expanding her traditional farming practices to one acre, contributing to increased family income, and inspiring others in the region to follow suit. Her notable achievements have led her to represent her district as a member of the Farmer Parliament, solidifying her status as one of the progressive farmers in the area.
