Envisioning Peace on Paper: Samvaad for Peace

In a heartening display of creativity and unity, over 380 children from various schools in Agra participated in the Samvaad drawing competition organized by the Agra Diocese of Social Service on May 27, 2024. This event, held under the auspices of Caritas India’s Samvaad Program, aimed to teach young minds the values of peace and harmony, emphasizing how collective efforts can build a developed nation.

The event was a vibrant celebration of youthful artistry and visionary thinking. Children from the Peace Club and Non-Formal Education (NFE) centers eagerly channeled their thoughts and dreams onto paper, depicting themes such as “Peace and Harmony,” “Clean India Green India,” “Save Earth,” and “Save Water.” Their drawings, filled with symbolic figures of earth, family, and home, were a testament to their unique perspectives on achieving peace.

Fr. Varghese, Director of ACDSS, expressed his pride in the young participants, emphasizing the importance of nurturing a sense of community and brotherhood among the younger generation. “Through their contributions, these children are shaping a better society. They are the future ambassadors of peace and harmony,” he said, encouraging everyone to live in mutual harmony to become good citizens.

The event drew a distinguished audience, including schoolteachers, community leaders, and prominent figures, underscoring the importance of peace education. The best drawings were awarded prizes, not just for their artistic merit but also to recognize the children’s commitment to promoting peace. These young awardees are envisioned as future leaders, entrusted with the responsibility of fostering harmony in their communities.

The Samvaad Peace Program, inspired by the concept of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family), continuously makes a difference in the hearts of people, bringing them together to nurture a sense of global community. The program’s goal is to instill values of peace, unity, and environmental consciousness among the younger generation.

The children’s artwork served as more than just a creative outlet; it was a powerful medium to raise awareness about pressing global issues. Themes like “Clean India Green India” and “Save Water” highlighted the urgent need for environmental conservation, while “Save Earth” echoed the call for sustainable living.

The success of the Samvaad Peace Program lies not only in the enthusiastic participation of these young artists but also in the community engagement it fostered. By providing a platform for children to express their thoughts and ideas, the program effectively promoted creativity, responsibility, and a collective vision for a peaceful world.

Parents and attendees left the event with a renewed sense of hope and pride, witnessing the potential of these young minds to bring about positive change. “It’s amazing to see how deeply our children think about peace and harmony. This competition has given them a platform to share their vision and inspire others,” said Anjali Roy, a parent.

The Samvaad drawing competition was more than just an art event; it was a celebration of peace, unity, and the power of youthful imagination. Caritas India’s initiative has sown the seeds of harmony and understanding, ensuring that the message of peace resonates through these young ambassadors’ lives and beyond.

As the event concluded, the children’s vibrant drawings will now be displayed in an exhibition touring various schools and community centers in Agra, spreading the message of peace and harmony far and wide. The Samvaad Peace Program has not only highlighted the artistic talents of Agra’s youth but also reinforced the timeless and universal aspiration for a peaceful world.
