Strengthening Partnerships: Capacity Building for Sustainable Development

Caritas India recently conducted a comprehensive Orientation and Capacity Building Program for its partners involved in the SCIAF Project and various forums in Odisha and Jharkhand. Held over two days, from September 30 to October 1, 2024, in Jharsuguda, Odisha, this initiative exemplifies Caritas India’s commitment to enhancing the capabilities of local organizations, particularly Diocesan Social Service Societies (DSSS), in critical areas such as Resource Mobilization, Risk Resilience, and Safeguarding.

The program brought together 25 key officials from four DSSS—Sambalpur and Rourkela in Odisha, Dumka, and Daltonganj in Jharkhand—along with representatives from the OROSA and SIGN forums. This gathering aligns with Caritas India’s strategic vision of empowering local partners to effectively respond to community needs while contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Notably, the focus on SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) underscores the organization’s holistic approach to development.

The training aimed to equip participants with essential skills and knowledge through various sessions that focused on understanding the SCIAF Project, exploring the Risk Resilience Framework, discussing Safeguarding Policies, and enhancing Proposal Development skills. The program commenced with an invocation led by Fr. John Kerketta, Forum Director of OROSA. Fr. Alphonse Toppo, Director of DSSS Sambalpur, welcomed attendees, setting a collaborative tone for the sessions ahead. A video message from Fr. Antony Fernandez, Executive Director of Caritas India, reinforced the significance of resilience-building and resource mobilization in addressing community needs.

Dr. Jaison from Caritas India facilitated engaging presentations that explored concepts of resilience and vulnerability through real-life case studies. Discussions included a landslide incident in Wayanad and Odisha’s cyclone preparedness model, providing participants with practical insights into disaster risk reduction strategies. A pivotal exercise involved conducting SWOT analyses within their respective dioceses. This activity not only identified critical challenges but also fostered a mindset geared towards transforming weaknesses into strengths and threats into opportunities. Mr. Abhishek Kumar further elaborated on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) concepts and their application in community initiatives.

Safeguarding policies were emphasized by Ms. Catherine Kune, who highlighted accountability measures necessary to protect women and children within organizational frameworks. This commitment aligns with Caritas India’s broader mission to ensure safe environments for all stakeholders. Additionally, Mr. John Lima led discussions on resource mobilization strategies, equipping DSSS representatives with tools to enhance their fundraising capabilities. The training emphasized identifying potential donors and developing effective proposals—critical skills for securing sustainable funding for community initiatives.

Dr. Jaison continued with sessions on Project Cycle Management and Result-Based Project Formulation, further enhancing participants’ knowledge and skills crucial for effective project implementation. This capacity-building program reflects Caritas India’s ongoing dedication to strengthening local partners through tailored training initiatives.

By focusing on resource mobilization, risk resilience, and safeguarding practices, Caritas India empowers DSSS to build sustainable systems that support vulnerable communities effectively. As a resource organization specializing in capacity building, Caritas India remains committed to fostering partnerships that drive meaningful change across Odisha and Jharkhand.

The insights gained from this program will undoubtedly contribute to achieving sustainable development goals while enhancing the overall effectiveness of partner organizations. Through such initiatives, Caritas India continues to play a pivotal role in empowering local communities, ensuring they are well-equipped to navigate challenges and seize opportunities for growth and development in an increasingly complex environment.
