In a transformative initiative, Caritas India, in partnership with NABARD, has been instrumental in uplifting marginalized farmers in Jharkhand through the formation of the Jaldega Farmers Producer Organization (FPO). This program not only aims to enhance agricultural productivity but also empowers farmers by collectivizing them into a structured organization, enabling them to achieve greater profits and sustainability.

Jharkhand’s unique agro-climatic conditions present significant challenges for smallholder farmers. The state is characterized by low agricultural productivity; despite receiving annual rainfall of 1200–1600 mm, the region suffers from low cropping intensity and poor technology adoption. Social and cultural barriers further complicate the situation, as tribal agricultural practices are often hindered by traditional norms and limited access to modern farming techniques. Additionally, the increasing impact of climate change has exacerbated production costs and reduced yields, pushing many farmers towards non-farming labor or migration. These factors create a pressing need for innovative solutions that can revitalize the agricultural landscape for these communities.

Recognizing these challenges, Caritas India initiated the formation of the Jaldega Farmers Producer Company Pvt. Ltd. between 2018 and 2021. The primary objectives of this initiative include mobilizing and collectivizing smallholder farmers to enhance their bargaining power in the market, providing essential training on modern agricultural practices, business operations, and governance to ensure effective management of the FPO, and establishing connections between farmers and markets to facilitate better pricing for their produce. Initially, 210 smallholders joined the FPO; today, membership has grown to 345. This growth reflects the increasing recognition among farmers of the benefits of collective action.

A shining example of this initiative is Mr. Balkrishna Gop, a young farmer from Jaldega village. Joining the FPO in 2018 marked a turning point in his agricultural journey. Through training sessions at esteemed institutions like Birsa Agricultural University and Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), he gained valuable insights into advanced farming techniques.

Mr. Balkrishna diversified his crops significantly, increasing millet cultivation from 1 acre to 2.5 acres and vegetable farming from 0.5 acres to 1.5 acres. His efforts yielded impressive results—harvesting 20 quintals of millet worth ₹40,000 and earning ₹1.5 lakh from vegetable sales in 2022-23 alone. His success has not only improved his family’s financial stability but also positioned him as a role model within the community. Mr. Balkrishna has invested in a tractor for his farming business and established a healthy bank balance, showcasing the potential benefits of collective farming.

The collaboration with NABARD has been pivotal in providing additional resources and training opportunities for FPO members. NABARD’s support has enabled board members and CEOs of the FPO to access specialized training programs that focus on business operations, understanding market dynamics, enhancing operational efficiency, and leadership development to equip members with skills necessary for effective governance and decision-making. This partnership has instilled hope among tribal populations in Jharkhand, demonstrating that with the right support, they can overcome socio-economic barriers and thrive.

The initiatives led by Caritas India, supported by NABARD, are reshaping the agricultural landscape for marginalized farmers in Jharkhand. By fostering collectivization through Farmer Producer Organizations, this program not just increased income but also empowered communities to achieve sustainable livelihoods towards a brighter future.
