MSW Students Gain Real-World Insights at Caritas India

Caritas India welcomed a group of 32 Master of Social Work (MSW) students from Don Bosco College, Dharmapuri, Tamil Nadu, along with their Principal, Father Babu, and three staff members, for an interactive exposure visit to its Head Office in New Delhi on 10 March 2025. This study tour offered the students a unique opportunity to understand the inner workings of one of the largest and most respected development organizations in India.

The visit provided first-hand experience of the practical side of social work and allowed the students to witness how Caritas India operates nationally. Fr. Anil Crasta, the Assistant Executive Director of Caritas India, warmly welcomed the delegation, offering words of encouragement and shedding light on the organization’s pivotal role in the development sector. He highlighted Caritas India’s leadership in humanitarian aid and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) efforts, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to supporting vulnerable communities nationwide.

The students were introduced to Caritas India’s organizational structure, vision, mission, and core values. A dedicated orientation session provided in-depth insights into the organization’s various programs and interventions. Special emphasis was placed on the processes behind program grants, decision-making protocols, and the organization’s proactive strategies for DRR to mitigate and respond to disasters.

The interactive session allowed students to actively engage with Caritas India experts, pose thoughtful questions and participate in meaningful discussions. Topics ranged from the operational challenges of humanitarian work to the ethical considerations guiding developmental programs. This dynamic exchange deepened the students’ understanding of the complexities of the social sector and the impactful work carried out by Caritas India.

Directly learning from the practitioners helps bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world application. The students benefitted from the enriching opportunity to clarify their doubts and experience of the thematic experts.

The visit enhanced the students’ academic learning and inspired them to pursue meaningful social work and development careers. Caritas India remains committed to fostering collaboration with academic institutions like Don Bosco College, recognizing the importance of nurturing the next generation of social sector professionals.

As the second-largest development organization in India, Caritas India continues to lead with compassion, resilience, and innovation to empower communities and shape a just and sustainable future for all.
