Who We Are

Climate change intensifies the frequency and impacts of hydro-metrological hazards. India is exposed to wide range of natural hazards which worsen the life situation of the people with food insecurity, losses to infrastructure and poor human health and wellbeing. Also, India’s 14% of the total population is undernourished (FAO, 2020) and malnutrition and food insecurity are highly prevalent in the remote rural regions. Indian states such as Assam, Bihar, Odisha and West Bengal are highly vulnerable to disasters, malnutrition and other social deprivation. Therefore, building resilience to disasters, ensuring access to food provisions, nutritional supplement and other welfare schemes are the prime focal theme of the Global Program India.

The Global Programme India on Food and Food Safety, Disaster Reduction and Promoting the Inclusion of Marginalized Communities and their improved access to various public welfare programmes, is a community-led partnership model hosted by Caritas India with the support of Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Government of Germany and Caritas Germany. The intervention aims to benefits communities of 17 districts from 4 Indian States of Assam, Bihar, and Odisha with some activities in the Sundarbans (West Bengal) in the first phase in the areas of emergency relief, disaster preparedness, nutrition, and social work in India and beyond.

The main beneficiaries of the program are traditionally marginalized groups, officially defined by the Indian authorities as & Scheduled Castes” (SCs) and & Scheduled Tribes & (STs), which live in the rural areas of selected districts.

Caritas India along with her twenty–three partner organisations are implementing the programme in 260 villages around intervention towards contributing to the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals 2 (Zero Hunger), 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and 13 (Climate Action).
