Caritas India Redefines Priorities in Changing Development Landscape

Amidst the evolving landscape of the development sector, where funding dynamics, governance challenges, and a competitive market are reshaping priorities, Caritas India is strategically focusing on resource mobilization and capacity building to strengthen the organization and sustain its mission.

In a significant move, Caritas India recently convened a five-day workshop in New Delhi, bringing together staff from across the country. This intensive gathering, held from February 17-21, 2025, aimed to delve deep into critical aspects of humanitarian work, including resource mobilization, leadership, risk management, compliance, and MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning).

The workshop kicked off with a session led by Fr. Anil Crasta, Assistant Executive Director, who emphasized the need for a unified and collective approach to resource mobilization. Fr. Crasta encouraged participants to shift their perspective from viewing fundraising as mere financial transactions to a values-based, mission-driven effort that prioritizes community well-being.

Caritas India’s multifaceted strategy for resource mobilization was outlined during the workshop. This comprehensive approach encompasses Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, fundraising campaigns, networking and collaboration, and systematic resource organization. Each component was elaborated upon, highlighting its crucial role in ensuring sustainable support for social initiatives.

The workshop also underscored the importance of effective communication through public relations and media management. This focus aims to enhance the organization’s visibility, credibility, and relationships with donors, partners, and the public. Fr. Crasta emphasized the significance of data collection in project structuring, noting its role in strengthening proposals, improving planning and execution, and amplifying resource mobilization efforts.

Uttama Pandit, Head of Operations at India Donates, provided insights into various fundraising models, including institutional funding, government grants, corporate grants, and emerging opportunities like crowdfunding and retail funding. The session also explored trends shaping the fundraising landscape, such as technology adoption, data analysis, and local resource mobilization.

Leadership and employee management were addressed by Mr. Prakash Layak from Association for Stimulating Know-How (ASK). The session focused on creating a nurturing environment that fosters growth, motivation, and retention. Key areas for investment in organizational stability were identified, including training and development, technology upgrades, and organizational processes.

Risk management was another crucial topic covered during the workshop. Mr. Kushal Neogy from Catholic Relief Services (CRS) outlined a five-step process for effective risk management: identify, analyze, prioritize, respond, and monitor and adjust. The importance of CIMS Caritas Internationalis Management Standards in mitigating potential risks was highlighted.

The workshop also explored the value of collaborative relationships with local partners, emphasizing a transition from a funding-centric approach to a more inclusive working partnership. Qualities of strong organizations, including adaptability, effective leadership, and willingness to evolve, were discussed.

The final day of the workshop focused on aligning development programs with SMART criteria, MEAL principles, and effective reporting strategies. Participants engaged in group exercises to develop project indicators and measurement frameworks, strengthening the organization’s approach to program design and implementation.
As Caritas India moves forward, it aims to harness the expertise and networks developed over its years of service for greater impact. Fr. Crasta encapsulated the spirit of the workshop by reminding participants of Caritas’ mission to spread joy amidst suffering, declaring 2025 as a “year of hope” and encouraging collective action.

By focusing on these redefined priorities and strengthening its organizational capabilities, Caritas India is positioning itself to remain effective and relevant in the face of evolving challenges in the development sector. This comprehensive approach, combining grassroots engagement with strategic planning and capacity building, ensures that Caritas India continues to make a meaningful impact in the lives of marginalized communities across India.
