Caritas India Showcases Reintegration Efforts at International Exchange Week

Caritas India showcased its impactful reintegration efforts during the International Exchange Week on Voluntary Return and Reintegration, held from September 30 to October 3, 2024, at Hotel Himalaya in Nepal. This significant event brought together experts and stakeholders from various Asian countries to discuss the challenges, perspectives, and opportunities surrounding voluntary return and reintegration for migrants.

Co-organized by Caritas Internationalis Belgium and Caritas Nepal, the week-long exchange served as a platform for sharing experiences and strategies among members from countries such as Mongolia, Nepal, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Bangladesh. The discussions aimed at creating sustainable solutions and fostering understanding for individuals returning to their home countries.

Fr. Antony Fernandes, Executive Director of Caritas India, emphasized the multifaceted challenges faced by returnees, including economic hardships, social stigma, and legal barriers. Caritas India presented its holistic approach to reintegration, which encompasses economic support, community engagement, and policy advocacy. This approach is crucial in addressing the unique needs of returnees who often struggle to reintegrate into their communities after facing various adversities abroad.

The presentation by Caritas India received positive feedback from participants at the International Exchange Week. Attendees praised the organization’s comprehensive and community-focused approach to reintegration. Moving forward, Caritas India aims to expand its programs further across India to support the successful reintegration of returnees.

The event saw participation from representatives of various countries, including multiple Asian reintegration partners such as Mongolia, Nepal, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Bangladesh. European NGOs working in the field of return and reintegration from Denmark, Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands were also present, along with Caritas International Belgium, representatives from the Belgian Government – Fedasil, and a representative from ICMPD – RIAT team.
