Caritas India Community Based Rehabilitation (CI CBR) is the Programme Management Unit (PMU) of Caritas India.

CBR started as a programme of Caritas India way back in 1996. CI CBR promotes the awareness, rehabilitation, inclusion and empowerment of all persons with disability, its primary focus is on women, children and those with severe disabilities.

CI CBR works with persons with disabilities, local communities and the Government to bring about the desired changes in the lives of persons with disabilities.

It brings about change by caring for 5 core areas of the life of persons with disabilities – education, health, livelihood, social inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities. As part of the CBR initiatives, Self-Help Groups of persons with disabilities are promoted to promote self-help and all-around development of persons with disabilities. They are federated as village-level, block-level, district-level, and state- level organizations for persons with disabilities.

Highlights of the Program: 

  • The current reach is 78,139 persons with disabilities that including 45,366 men and 32,773 women. The data comprises 20,002 children and 58,137 adults.
  • 21 types of disabilities are covered as included in the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016.
  • 16 Core team members at CI CBR and 130 field staff consisting of a mix of Programme Extension Associates and Community Educators. They plan, implement, monitor, evaluate, report and document the results in collaboration with persons with disabilities and their communities in general.
  • The programmes are funded by international organizations namely Misereor, Germany, Light for the World, Austria and Caritas Germany.

Impact:

  •  3,420 children with disabilities have enhanced their functional abilities in terms of performing their daily living activities, improved mobility, and communication.
  • 1,516 children with disabilities showed improvement in their academic and co-curricular competencies.
  • 6,552 adults with disabilities are engaged in productive activities that contribute to their family income or wellbeing.
  • 4,466 adults with disabilities have increased income by doing various types of jobs.
  • 6,329 persons with disabilities have accessed social security benefits and skill development/ livelihood opportunities through support from the local community.
  •  7,303 PwDs, through participation in the SHGs have become capable of making choices for their life and work to achieve them.
  • 3,617 Village level SHGs of persons with disabilities, 98 block level and 24 district level organizations of persons with disabilities function addressing issues and bringing systemic changes.
