Cyclone Remal: Caritas reached with Humanitarian aid

Caritas India, in partnership with Siemens, has extended critical support to communities devastated by Cyclone Remal. Making landfall on May 26, 2024, the cyclone left a path of destruction across Assam, Manipur, and Mizoram, prompting Caritas India to swiftly mobilize resources and respond to the urgent needs of the affected populations.

Rapid Needs Assessment and Immediate Response

Following the cyclone’s impact, Caritas India (CI) conducted a rapid needs assessment, gathering crucial loss and damage data through regular Situation Reports (SITREPs). Collaborating with other IAG WB partners, CI played a pivotal role in completing the Joint Rapid Needs Assessment (JRNA) and provided technical support for sectoral editing.

In response to the pressing needs of the affected communities, Caritas India mobilized resources and reached out to partners and donors. This proactive approach enabled CI to deliver essential support to 1,820 families across Manipur and West Bengal, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations received immediate aid.

Dual Crisis Management in Manipur

In Manipur, the situation was further compounded by a recent hailstorm. Prior to Cyclone Remal, Caritas India had already supported 5,220 individuals (1,164 families) with shelter, multi-purpose cash transfers (MCT), and protection activities. Recognizing the heightened needs following the cyclone, CI expanded its support to include Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) interventions.

CI extended its reach to 920 households across 30 villages in eight blocks within three districts, providing essential WASH kits to address urgent hygiene and sanitation needs. This comprehensive response not only mitigated immediate suffering but also contributed to the long-term resilience of the affected communities.

Focused Shelter Support in West Bengal

In West Bengal, Caritas India concentrated its efforts on providing immediate shelter support to those affected by Cyclone Remal. By supplying shelter kits, CI reached out to 920 households across 25 villages in five blocks within the North and South 24 Parganas districts. This timely assistance was crucial in helping families rebuild and recover from the cyclone’s devastating impact.

Collaboration and Community Impact

Caritas India’s proactive approach in mobilizing resources and garnering support from various partners and donors has been instrumental in its rapid and effective response. By addressing immediate needs and providing essential support, CI is not only aiding recovery but also contributing to the long-term resilience of the affected communities.

The communities expressed deep gratitude for the timely interventions, especially given the minimal response time. At a time when no other assistance was available, they were immensely appreciative of the support received. Shelter and WASH were identified as the most critical needs post-cyclone, and CI’s response was aligned with these priorities, demonstrating a keen understanding of the communities’ urgent requirements.

Sustained Commitment to Humanitarian Aid

As Caritas India continues its humanitarian efforts, the organization remains steadfast in its mission to alleviate human suffering. The support extended to the affected populations through sustained interventions is a testament to CI’s commitment to fostering resilience against future disasters.

The ongoing efforts of Caritas India, in collaboration with Siemens and other partners, underscore the importance of swift and coordinated humanitarian responses. By prioritizing human suffering and delivering targeted aid, CI has set a standard for effective disaster response and community support.

Building Resilience for the Future

Caritas India’s actions in the wake of Cyclone Remal highlight the organization’s dedication to not only addressing immediate needs but also strengthening the resilience of communities against future adversities. Through comprehensive interventions in shelter, WASH, and protection activities, CI is paving the way for sustainable recovery and long-term development.

The collaboration between Caritas India and Siemens, along with the support of various partners and donors, exemplifies the power of collective action in the face of disaster. As CI continues to support the affected communities, it remains committed to its mission of alleviating human suffering and promoting resilience and development.

Caritas India’s swift and effective response to Cyclone Remal, supported by Siemens, has made a significant impact on the lives of those affected. By prioritizing the needs of the most vulnerable and providing essential aid, CI is not only helping communities recover but also building a foundation for a more resilient future. Through continued collaboration and dedicated efforts, Caritas India stands as a beacon of hope and support in times of crisis.
