Jayanti Gomango and her husband Saiti Gomango reside in the periphery of Laxmipur village along with their children and grandchildren. Two small kuccha rooms serve as a refuge for this family of six belonging to the Soura tribe. On the night of October 11, the heavy winds and rainfall swept away the tin and smashed the humble dwelling, damaging all her household belongings.

Cyclone Titli, which made landfall near Gopalpur in Odisha with surface wind speeds of 126 kmph took 77 lives and affecting more than 60 lakh people in 17 districts. The cyclonic storm followed by resultant flood and landslide

destroyed 378590 hectare of crops and damaged 98103 houses.

Jayanti Gomango’s family survived on the very little rice which she had managed to save from her storage the following day. Jayanti and her family currently staying at a neighbour’s house and sustaining on rice borrowed from neighbors which she cooks in open as the tiny kitchen of her house is damaged beyond repair.

Government have has announced gratuitous relief for 15 days at the rate of Rs. 60/- per adult and Rs 45/- per child per day to all affected families of Ganjam, Gajapati, and Gunupur Sub- Division of Rayagada district.

Caritas India assessed the situation and immediately started its relief operation in the 60 villages of 7 Panchayats in Gajapati, Ganjam and Rayagada districts. 2000 families will be supported with Wash kits and 3500 families with Shelter kits.

The WaSH kits including 20 litre bucket with lid, mug, NADCC tablets, ORS, Liquid antiseptic, bathing soap, detergent bars, toothpaste, toothbrushes and cloth for menstrual hygiene is provided to the affected community. The Shelter kits includes tarpaulin ground sheet and roof sheet, 2 mosquito nets, 2 bedsheets and a blanket will be given to the people whose houses are damaged.

This response focused on delivering life-saving relief materials towards preventing diseases, menstrual and general hygiene, security and safety provisions for women, girls, children, elderly through Shelter, NFI and WaSH, delivering humanitarian aid to 10,000 individuals.

Caritas has already started the distribution process and reached out to 150 families in the area of shelter and 142 families with WaSH. Caritas is expected to reach its target families before the end of November.
