Delhi’s PLHIV’s Oriented on Crucial Welfare Schemes

Over 30 newly registered ART patients from East Delhi slums attended an orientation session on social welfare schemes for People Living with HIV (PLHIV) on January 21, 2025. The event, part of Caritas India’s Gram Nirman urban program, aimed to improve access to vital entitlements for PLHIVs.

Led by a resource person from GTB Hospital and urban program associate Ms. Shweta, the session provided comprehensive information on central and state welfare programs. The session covered a wide range of schemes, including healthcare, financial aid, and education. Participants received detailed information on eligibility criteria, application processes, and necessary documentation for each scheme. The interactive format allowed attendees to ask questions and clarify doubts, ensuring a thorough understanding of the available benefits.

Caritas India’s Gram Nirman program is working closely with the Health Department and the Women & Child Development Department to facilitate the linkage of PLHIVs with various Social Security Schemes & Entitlements. This collaborative approach aims to improve the economic empowerment of PLHIVs and other marginalized individuals in the community.

Delhi has an estimated 58,563 persons living with HIV, with a prevalence of 0.32% among the 15-49 year population. The Gram Nirman program’s efforts aim to bridge the gap between PLHIVs and available social welfare schemes in the region.

The urban component of the project focuses on Community Based Rehabilitation of Families living with HIV/AIDS, emphasizing inclusive socio-economic development. Activities include training on home-based care, developing strategies for healthy contacts and drug adherence, and facilitating awareness sessions on welfare schemes.

While the orientation session successfully informed and empowered PLHIVs about social welfare schemes, ongoing efforts are needed to ensure barrier-free access to these benefits. By igniting fresh hopes and providing crucial information, the Gram Nirman program is paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive environment for PLHIVs in Delhi’s urban communities.
