‘Janakeeyam ee Athijeevanam’, a public convention was organised by the government, non-governmental organisations and voluntary services of the good-hearted people of Kerala to commemorate the stories of survival during the last year’s devastating floods and landslips.

Alappuzha District Administration took this initiative to honor different organisations’ involved in relief and recovery efforts during and immediately after the Kerala Floods, 2018. The district-level public convention was held on July 20, 2019, at Municipal Town Hall, Alappuzha.

Caritas India was honored with a token of appreciation for the commendable outcomes achieved in Kerala through the relief, response and early recovery programmes. In recognition of the dedicated efforts, amidst prominent ministers and government representatives of the State and the district, Mr. Amal Sebastian, Programme Officer – Ashakiranam, received the memento for Caritas India from the District Collector, Ms. Abdullah.

Caritas India had partaken in the flood relief and recovery efforts from Day One. From distributing food and WASH kits to launching Athijeevan, Caritas India’s Early Recovery Programme to help the victims during the humanitarian crises. Through Athijeevan alone, Caritas India had reached out to 220 families with Shelter Repair support, 1755 families through livelihood programmes and 374 families with WASH programmes (majorly toilet repair and construction) in Alappuzha.

Dr. Adeela Abdullah, IAS, also presented the post-flood achievements of Alappuzha, Kerala by the administration and like-minded organisations. During the programme, it was shared that the State Government has spent approximately 1000 crores in Alappuzha to undertake rehabilitation programmes.

Another 400 crores will be spent on different recovery programmes in the near future. Dr. Adbullah also shared that the convention also invites organisations and people of goodwill to come together and partake in the government initiatives to build a “New Kerala”.
