Empowering Partners with Sustainable Project Management Skills

To enhance the capabilities of local NGOs, Caritas India recently organized a two-day Project Cycle Management (PCM) training workshop at Shanti Bhawan, the SVD campus in Jharsuguda, Odisha, on September 1-2, 2024. This workshop, conducted in collaboration with the Arise Foundation, brought together 30 participants from various congregations under the Amrat Network, showcasing Caritas India’s commitment to empowering its partners in the field.

The workshop was led by Dr. Jaison Varghese and Mr. John Lima from Caritas India, who focused on equipping participants with essential skills for result-based project formulation. The event kicked off with an engaging icebreaker and a devotional prayer, setting a positive tone for the learning experience.

On the first day, participants delved into the fundamentals of project management. Dr. Varghese introduced key concepts such as need and context analysis, objective setting, results frameworks, and documentation tools. An interactive session led by Mr. Lima explored the problem tree and solution tree approach, allowing participants to work collaboratively on identifying project goals, objectives, results, and activities. This hands-on approach enabled them to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, addressing pressing local issues such as child malnutrition, child protection, unemployment, and quality education.

The second day commenced with a reflective prayer and a review of the previous day’s learnings. Participants were inspired by an empowerment video clip presented by Dr. Varghese, which emphasized the importance of community capacity building. The day continued with a session on Log Frame Analysis, where participants examined key components such as objectives, outcomes, outputs, indicators, and risks. Despite initial challenges, the participants successfully developed SMART project goals and budgets with the facilitators’ guidance, leaving them with a deeper understanding of PCM principles and the confidence to apply these skills in their respective regions.

This PCM workshop is a testament to Caritas India’s dedication to building the capacity of its partner organizations. By providing practical skills in result-based project formulation, Caritas India empowers NGOs within the Amrat Network to effectively tackle critical local issues and implement sustainable development initiatives. This capacity-building effort not only enhances project management expertise but also strengthens resource mobilization strategies, ensuring that partner organizations can independently sustain their projects and create lasting impacts in their communities.

The training workshop also fostered a spirit of collaboration and networking among participants, allowing them to share experiences and best practices. This exchange of ideas is crucial for building a robust support system among NGOs, enabling them to work together towards common goals.

As the participants left the workshop, they expressed gratitude for the invaluable knowledge gained and the opportunity to connect with fellow practitioners. Many participants voiced their eagerness to implement the skills learned and to contribute to the sustainability of their respective projects.

Caritas India’s commitment to empowering local partners through initiatives like the PCM workshop underscores its role as a catalyst for change in the region. By equipping NGOs with the tools and knowledge necessary for effective project management, Caritas India is not only enhancing the capabilities of its partners but also fostering a culture of accountability and transparency in the development sector.

This initiative reflects a broader vision of sustainable development, where local organizations are empowered to lead change in their communities. As Caritas India continues to support its partners in building their capacities, the potential for positive impact in Odisha and beyond remains immense.
