For the family of Shantanu (age 38) from Danout Village in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh District, life has been a relentless struggle against adversity. Their challenges extend beyond intergenerational poverty, encompassing a series of events that have compounded their vulnerability. Shantanu’s life took a dramatic turn in 2018 when a tragic road accident left him with a permanent disability in his left leg. This setback not only impacted his mobility but also drained the family’s savings for his medical treatment. Despite his efforts to secure support, Shantanu’s Unique Disability Identity Card (UDID) classified his condition as a temporary disability below 40%, disqualifying him from monthly social security benefits.
Undeterred by these setbacks, Shantanu demonstrates remarkable resilience. He continues to work his small plot of land, growing vegetables while seated on the ground, his determination a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to persevere. However, the family’s trials intensified in 2023 when Shantanu’s wife, mother to their two children, was diagnosed with sickle cell anaemia. This genetic disorder, characterized by abnormal haemoglobin, further strained the family’s already precarious situation.
It was at this critical juncture that the Khushaal Bachpan project intervened, offering a lifeline to the struggling family. The project’s TWIN TRACK approach, designed to support persons living with disabilities, provided targeted assistance. Shantanu received a tricycle, significantly improving his independence and mobility. The project helped re-establish Shantanu’s food stall in the local market, providing a crucial source of income. The family was connected with the nearest public health centre (PHC) for essential medical care, and counselling services were provided to help the family navigate their challenges.
Despite these interventions, the family’s struggles began to take a toll on the children. In October 2024, it came to light that Kamlesh (12) and Naresh (8) had become irregular in their school attendance. The Khushaal Bachpan academic mentor’s vigilance during home visits and support classes revealed a distressing reality: the boys had dropped out of school, sacrificing their education to contribute to the family’s survival.
Recognizing the critical importance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty, the Khushaal Bachpan team sprang into action with a multifaceted approach. Regular visits and psychosocial support were provided to both the children and their parents. The team facilitated ambulance services for Shantanu’s wife’s hospital visits and blood transfusions, liaising with various government departments. Through persistent dialogue and support, the team successfully re-enrolled both children in their respective classes (5th and 7th). Khushaal Bachpan academic mentors now closely monitor the children’s progress, ensuring they receive the support needed to thrive academically.
The story of Shantanu’s family vividly illustrates the devastating impact of poverty, disability, and inadequate support structures on vulnerable families. However, it also highlights the transformative power of timely, comprehensive interventions. The Khushaal Bachpan program’s success in this case underscores the effectiveness of a holistic approach that addresses immediate family needs while prioritizing children’s education and long-term well-being. By ensuring the continuity of education and providing crucial support services, the program aims to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty and create lasting change.
As we reflect on this family’s journey from despair to hope, it becomes clear that there are many similar stories across the Khushaal Bachpan project area. Families grappling with poverty, disability, and lack of access to essential services risk losing their children to the same cycle of hardship. The success of interventions like those provided to Shantanu’s family serves as both an inspiration and a call to action. It demonstrates that with the right support, even the most vulnerable families can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds.
Through the combined efforts of dedicated programs, community support, and the resilience of families like Shantanu’s, we can work towards a future where education and opportunity are within reach for all, regardless of their circumstances. As we move forward, it is crucial to continue and expand such comprehensive support programs, ensuring that no child is left behind and that every family has the opportunity to build a brighter future.
