Fostering Hope and Rebuilding Lives in the Aftermath of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods

In the aftermath of the devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Flood that struck Sikkim on October 4th, impacting over 60,000 lives along the Teesta River in Sikkim and West Bengal, Caritas India has been at the forefront of humanitarian efforts. In collaboration with START Network, we are actively engaged in restoring homes and rebuilding the shattered lives of affected families, with a steadfast commitment to providing support where it is needed most.

Our immediate focus is on ensuring improved hygiene conditions and safe dwelling for the 1420 affected households, as well as enhancing the purchasing power to address the priority needs of 875 households through fund assistance. To date, Caritas India has extended a lifeline to 1146 families who are grappling with the profound aftermath of the flood. Additionally, in an effort to bring a semblance of normalcy back to the lives of the youngest victims, we have established 8 Child-Friendly Spaces in both Sikkim and West Bengal.

As part of our unwavering commitment to effective relief operations, Fr. (Dr.) Jolly Puthenpura, Assistant Executive Director took a personal initiative to visit the affected areas in Sikkim and West Bengal. His interactions with the affected families in Rangpo and Singtam areas of Sikkim, as well as the Nozok village in West Bengal, have provided invaluable insights into their long-term needs and aspirations.

During his visit, over 500 families in the Rangpo and Singtam areas of Sikkim, and Nozok and Rangpo areas of West Bengal, received Hygiene and Non-Food Item (NFI) assistance in the presence of Fr. Jolly. The inauguration of 2 Child-Friendly Spaces in Nozok and Rangpo marked a heartening moment, bringing joy to the faces of children who are on their journey to recovery. Fr. Jolly emphasized that these Child-Friendly Spaces are more than just learning environments; they play a crucial role in helping the young ones cope with the emotional impact of the disaster.

Fr. Jolly’s direct engagement with the affected communities has not only strengthened our understanding of their immediate needs but also underscored the importance of a compassionate and hands-on approach in humanitarian assistance. It is through these personal connections that Caritas India can tailor its efforts to address the unique challenges faced by the communities in Rangpo, Singtam, and Nozok.

Caritas India’s commitment to the affected areas goes beyond immediate relief efforts. As we continue our tireless endeavors to bring relief and support to those affected by the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood, we remain steadfast in our mission to rebuild communities, restore livelihoods, and foster hope. The journey to recovery is long, and Caritas India is dedicated to walking alongside the affected families every step of the way.
