In a heartwarming visit to Chhattisgarh, Fr Antony Fernandes, Executive Director of Caritas India, is on a six-day journey from 10th to 15th December 2024, to cover Raipur, Jashpur, Raigarh, and Sarguja districts and witness the transformative impact of the Khushaal Bachpan program. This initiative, aimed at fostering joyful childhoods, has been making waves across five districts in the state, touching the lives of countless children and their communities
The Khushaal Bachpan program, focuses on creating a safe, healthy, and happy environment for children. It works closely with communities to address challenges like school dropouts, lack of digital skills, poor nutrition, and limited opportunities for children with disabilities. Fr Antony’s visit aimed to understand these efforts better and encourage the team to continue their impactful work.
Strengthening Community Engagement
One of the key highlights of the program is its strong focus on community engagement. Using the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, Khushaal Bachpan has empowered local leaders and community members to take charge of improving children’s lives. In Rajamma village, Fr Antony interacted with community leaders who shared how the program has reduced school dropouts and improved learning outcomes. The active involvement of Panchayat Raj Institution members has strengthened these efforts further.
Bal Choupals
Fr Antony also visited eight Bal Choupals – special spaces created for children to learn, play, and grow. These centers are designed to encourage creativity and imagination while helping children develop reading, listening, and learning skills. Children across these centers were excited to meet Fr Antony and proudly read stories from books provided by the program. Fr. Antony shared his experience for strengthening the initiative to further amplify the impact. These Bal Choupals have become a cornerstone of holistic childhood development in the region.
Building Skills for a Brighter Future
The Khushaal Bachpan program also focuses on older children who have dropped out of school. Fr Antony met participants at a rural entrepreneurship center where young adults above 18 years are being trained in skills that help them become self-reliant entrepreneurs. This initiative provides hope and opportunities for those who missed out on formal education.
Health and Nutrition
Good health and proper nutrition are essential for a child’s growth and development. Fr Antony observed how the program is working with caregivers to educate them about preparing nutritious meals using locally available resources. The program also partners with government schemes like ICDS (Integrated Child Development Scheme) under ECCE component (Early Child Care and Education) as well as with health department (for health camps) at local level to ensure children receive proper care through health camps and early childhood education initiatives.
Supporting Children with Disabilities
Another important aspect of Khushaal Bachpan is its commitment to inclusivity. The program has successfully supported over 45 children with disabilities by connecting them with social welfare departments and helping them access disability cards. This effort ensures that every child gets an equal opportunity to thrive.
Strengthening Partnerships for Greater Impact
During his visit, Fr Antony met with Most Rev. Paul Toppo, Bishop of Raigarh and Most Rev. Emmanuel Kerketta, Bishop of Jashpur. These discussions focused on strengthening partnerships between Caritas India and local dioceses to expand the reach of Khushaal Bachpan. The bishops appreciated the program’s efforts and expressed their support for future collaborations.
Fr. Antony’s visit highlighted how Khushaal Bachpan is transforming lives in Chhattisgarh by addressing critical issues affecting children’s well-being. The program’s focus on education, health, nutrition, skills development, and inclusivity is creating a positive ripple effect across communities. With continued efforts and strong partnerships, Khushaal Bachpan is paving the way for a brighter future for children in this region.
