The second resource and information centre for Migrants in Kerala was inaugurated on 9th April 2021 in Burnassery, Kannur, Kerala. This is the initiative of Caritas India in partnership with the KAIROS Kannur diocese under the Sudhar- Pravasi Bandhu program.
Kerala has emerged as a major destination for migrant workers with recent estimates pinning the number to about 3.5 million. The demographic advancement of Kerala and the resultant transformations in the labour force has facilitated large-scale migration to the state.
The Migrant Resource Center (MRC) will provide social, legal, cultural, emotional and psychological support to the internal migrant workers who come to Kerala from other states. The first Migrant Resource Center (MRC) was inaugurated in Ernakulam on August 2021.
The inaugural ceremony was conducted by Fr Jolly Puthenpura, Asst. Executive Director of Caritas India. Most Rev. (Dr.) Alex Vadakkumthala, the Bishop of Kannur Diocese, inaugurated the Migrant Resource Centre along with Mr. Baby Castro, the Deputy Labor Commissioner of Kannur. In his keynote address, Mr. Baby Castro stated that it is our duty and responsibility to help our fellow beings especially the migrant workers who have come to work in the state of Kerala.
Fr Shaiju Peter welcomed the gathering and briefed about the problems of migrants who are now an integral part of Kerala’s economy. He also delivered the significance of the project and its possibilities in the future.
Bishop Alex Vadakkumthala delivered in his presidential address cited his own experiences working with people from different states.
Fr Jolly Puthenpura during the inaugural speech specified that the resource centre was a long-cherished dream of Caritas India and ensured that the set up would offer social security and legal protection to the migrants.
Fr Paul an active volunteer among migrants in the Kannur district felicitated the event by sharing his own experiences. The Vicar Forane of Kannur Msgr. Clement and Mr. Jesudas, the general coordinator of KAIROS also addressed the gathering.
