Lung Cancer Awareness: Caritas focus to combat the disease with knowledge and Cooperation

Cancer of lung, mouth, stomach and oesophagus were the most common cancers among males. Among males, lung cancer was the most common, accounting for 10.5% of the cases, nearly 0.7 lakh cases.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness month and Caritas India partners are joining forces to help beat the disease – encouraging the community to adopt healthy practices and make informed choices for their lives to combat cancer.

Caritas India partners across Kerala have joined to organise events at different places to raise awareness about lung cancer.

As part of Lung cancer Awareness Month, Kothamangalam Social Service Society distributed free masks and sanitizers to cancer patients under the Caritas India Ashakiranam Cancer Care Programme. Kothamangalam Municipal Councilor, Tina Mathew inaugurated the distribution and KSSS Director Rev. Dr. Thomas Parayidam presided over the function. Ashakiranam DLO shared important facts about Cancer and raised awareness through different activities.

Tiruvalla Social Service Society BODHANA conducted various programmes in the month of November 2020 focusing on creating a cancer-free atmosphere. The partner has conducted a special webinar with the help of Childline Pathanamthitta District focusing on the female children and their parents for raising awareness.  Sr. Shincy.K.U, HOD of Social work department, Sahyajyothi college Kumily has taken a session on cancer and its preventive measures.

MEDICARE 2020, a monthly medical assistance programme was inaugurated on October 1, 2020, by Bodhana. The programme is providing monthly medical assistance to the cancer patients from October 2019 onwards. On October 2020, the second phase of the programme was initiated an increased number of beneficiaries.

As part of the National Cancer Awareness Day, Quilon Social Service Society organized various awareness programmes. Quilon DCC President Adv. Bindu Krishna inaugurated the function and appreciated QSSS for their exemplary care and protection of cancer patients in society. As part of Ashakiranam cancer Care Campaign which provides assistance to cancer patients in various parts of Kollam district. In this connection, a mementoes were presented to the winners of Breast Cancer Care Awareness Month competition.

An awareness seminar on Lung Cancer was organized by Samridhy, Muvattupuzha Diocesan Social service Society in association with Mar Alias College, Kottappady.  Samridhy also launched the Collection box for resource Mobilization for Ashakiranam Campaign.

CHETHANA Mavelikkara and SAHRUDHAYA Eranakulam organized Hair Donation event and also given the certificates to the Hair Donors during a public event.

WSSS, Mananthavady has taken this as an opportunity to organized training Programme for Ashakiranam volunteers on Lifestyle Diseases and Lung Cancer awareness. ADS, Alappuzha also organized a webinar with an aim of Cancer Free Community. The programme includes awareness of Lung Cancer Care and prevention.
