Nagesh’s Rise from the Quiet Village to Global Stardom

In the serene village of Kadaripura nestled within the Kolar Gold Fields of Karnataka, an extraordinary tale unfolds, defying both stereotypes and expectations. In the heart of this tranquil landscape, Nagesh, a person with dwarfism, has emerged as a symbol of resilience and triumph, transcending the boundaries set by societal norms. His journey, fueled by the wings of Caritas India’s Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) program, paints a vivid portrait of a determined soul breaking free from the constraints of preconceived limitations, reaching heights never thought possible in the world of international sports.

Nagesh’s educational journey was not without its challenges. Despite receiving encouragement from his teachers, his short stature subjected him to ridicule from some peers. The discrimination he faced became a driving force behind the inclusion of ‘dwarfism’ as a recognized disability under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016. However, rather than succumbing to societal pressures, Nagesh channeled his determination into a resolve to make a positive impact on himself, his family, and society at large.

Inclined towards sports, Nagesh initially encountered skepticism from institutions due to his physical stature. Undeterred, he explored dance as an outlet for his passion, performing at local functions and orchestras for a modest income. It was at this juncture that Caritas India’s CBR team crossed paths with him, bringing a turning point in his life.

The CBR team facilitated the issuance of a Unique Disability ID card, enabling Nagesh to apply for a monthly pension. This disability allowance, amounting to Rs. 800 per month from the state government, provided a crucial financial lifeline. Encouraged by a local Trust member who recognized his sports talent, Nagesh took his first steps into the realm of competitive sports, starting with district-level competitions.

The trajectory of Nagesh’s journey was marked by success and encouragement from authorities, propelling him to state and national level competitions for people with disabilities. Despite facing financial constraints, Nagesh’s determination led him to international sports events in the United States, Canada, Sharjah, Bangkok, and Dubai, where he clinched an impressive tally of 5 Gold, 5 Silver, and 3 Bronze medals.

His most recent triumph unfolded at the 8th International Games 2023 for people with Dwarfism in Germany. Competing in the Athletics Class 1 division, Nagesh seized three gold medals in Javelin throw, discus throw, and shotput. This remarkable achievement not only brought glory to his country but also garnered attention locally and internationally.

Recognized by dignitaries such as the District Collector of Kolar and the Governor of Karnataka, Nagesh’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of inclusive programs. His success became a source of inspiration for many, highlighted in local events organized by government and non-governmental organizations. Caritas India’s CBR program, through the formation of Self-Help groups for persons with disabilities, further amplified Nagesh’s impact as he actively encouraged youth in his village to participate in sports.

Despite his remarkable achievements, Nagesh remains grounded in his aspirations. He dreams of securing a government job, and his vision extends to establishing a stadium at the district headquarters of Kolar. This ambitious dream is not just personal; it reflects his commitment to fostering and promoting the talents of people with disabilities in the realm of sports and games.

Nagesh’s journey, propelled by Caritas India’s CBR program, is not merely a story of individual triumph; it is a testament to the transformative potential of community-based initiatives. In the face of societal barriers, Nagesh stands as a living testament to the resilience and capabilities of individuals with disabilities, urging others to believe in their potential and pursue their dreams. His story resonates not just within the confines of Kadaripura but serves as a beacon of hope for a more inclusive and supportive society.
