In the ever-evolving landscape of agriculture, a paradigm shift has taken root, transforming the traditional approach of producing and selling commodities into a strategic focus on meeting consumer needs through value addition. This shift is not merely theoretical; it is actively reshaping the destinies of smallholder farmers. FARM Northeast, recognizing the potential in this transition, has been promoting farmers, particularly in the case of turmeric cultivation, showcasing how value addition can triple incomes and sustain livelihoods.
Seva Kendra Silchar (SKS), a dedicated partner of Caritas India, organized a workshop in September 2023, guiding smallholder farmers on the importance and processes of value addition. The objective was clear: move beyond the conventional mindset of raw commodity production and understand the attributes that consumers seek. The focus shifted from merely growing crops to processing them in ways that enhance market value.
A key facet of this initiative was equipping farmers with the tools needed for value addition. The introduction of a turmeric grinder under the FARM program proved to be a game-changer. This machine became the spark for transforming raw turmeric into a processed form, ready for market consumption. The impact was immediate and profound, not just in economic terms but in the empowerment of the farmers themselves.
The turmeric grinder, provided to the farmers, enabled them to process their harvest efficiently. The processed turmeric, now a refined and market-ready product, commands a higher price—selling for Rs. 200-250 per kilogram. The financial implications are staggering, with farmers witnessing a substantial increase in their annual earnings, soaring to a remarkable range of Rs. 50,000-60,000. This represents a threefold increase from their previous income levels.
Mrs. Helen Hmar, a proud member of the Gideon Farmers Club, expressed this transformation eloquently: “We have transformed our humble crop into a valuable commodity.” The sense of accomplishment resonates not just with Mrs. Hmar but with the entire community of farmers who have embraced value addition.
Mr. Kaisei Haokip, Community Educator, FARM at SKS, aspires to delve into more value addition of other agricultural products. This thought underscores the sustainability of the initiative and indicates a shift from a one-time success story to a sustaining commitment to value-addition practices.
The impact of this value-addition initiative extends beyond financial gains. It has become a compelling example of how sustainable agricultural practices, coupled with continuous support from organizations like Caritas India and SKS, can overcome market challenges and elevate the overall livelihoods of farmers. The ripple effect is evident—the community is thriving, empowered by their newfound ability to add value to their agricultural produce.
“It became an inspiring example of how value addition can empower farmers, enhance the quality of their products, and provide a sustainable livelihood. With their golden transformations, they not only added value to turmeric but also brought prosperity to their community,” says Ms. Bonani Bhattacharjee, a Field Programme Associate at SKS.
The journey of Gideon Farmers Club with the support of the Caritas India FARM Northeast program exemplifies the transformative power of value addition in agriculture. By embracing innovation and breaking free from traditional practice, these smallholder farmers have not only tripled their income but have also secured a sustainable livelihood.
