Traditional Herbal Healers certified by North East Christian University (NECU) Dimapur

Amus Tiru, attends his patients even on Saturdays at home or at the Rajabari market place. He has been treating patients for the last 49 years. He is a Traditional herbal healer from Gorajan village in Samaguri Tehsil, Nagaon of Assam. The village is one of the target villages of FARM Northeast programme with 120 households and 596 population mainly of Adivasis, Assamese, Nepalies, and muslim population.

Amus, who is in his 70s, is the encyclopedia of traditional herbal medicines in the village. He can heal jaundice, malaria, kidney stone, TB, diabetics, asthma, gastric, cuts, skin disease, menstrual-related issues, high and low blood pressure, diarrhoea, dysentery, and many other illnesses. He is one of the identified herbal practitioners who has experience of herbal practices and traditional healer.

Seva Kendra Dibrugarh (SKD), one of the partners of FARM Northeast programme in Assam intervened in identifying the traditional healers in the area and conducted an awareness program on the importance of traditional herbal practices and the conservation of herbal plants. The team SKD has formed Herbal Medicine Preservation Committee comprised of 8 active identified herbal practitioners with Amus Tiru as the president of the Committee.

The objective behind the forming committee was to bring strong bond and unity among the practitioner for the sustenance and continuation of the activity after the project end. The team of practitioners’ act as resource persons for all the awareness program and demonstrations conducted in the villages and even helping the organization in identifying medicinal herbs.

The involvement of the traditional herbal healers in the project has increased their confidence and recognition among the community. Interest is seen among them in the promotion of herbal medicine and sharing knowledge to the community.

Amush met Herbal Medicine research team comprised of Doctors and Professors working in Northeast with the same objective as FARM Northeast team to promote and encourage traditional herbal medicine and practitioner in the Northeast.

The researchers recognize the traditional healers and certify them as professional healers, this certification encourages other healers to practice traditional herbal medicines and revive traditional practices of treatment.

On 6th August 2019, Amush along with 15 other healers received the certificate from QCI Delhi through North East Christian University (NECU) Dimapur, Nagaland. This is one of the strategic moves in terms of encouraging traditional healers to conduct awareness programs on herbal medicine and conserve herbal plants in the region.
