Turning the Tide: Crusade Against Drug Abuse on International Day Against Drug Trafficking

“Another key way to counter drug abuse and trafficking is through prevention, which is done by promoting greater justice, educating young people in values that build personal and community life, accompanying those in need, and giving hope for the future,” stated Pope Francis. This profound message guided Caritas India’s Surokhit Shaishav project as it observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26, 2024. The project, committed to promoting safe childhood, organized impactful events across West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the urgent need for education, awareness, and community involvement to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse.

The United Nations General Assembly designated June 26 as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to reaffirm global commitment to achieving a drug-free world. The UNODC’s World Drug Report 2023 underscores the escalating crisis, particularly among youth, who remain the most vulnerable to drug abuse.

In Darjeeling district, the Surokhit Shaishav project engaged 62 police personnel, including Civic Police volunteers, constables, and sub-inspectors from seven police stations, in a sensitization session. Mrs. Anuradha Chettri, a Child Welfare Committee member and former Juvenile Justice Board member, highlighted the dangers of substance abuse among adolescents and children, citing Section 77 of the JJ Act, which imposes stringent penalties for providing intoxicants to minors.

Mr. Statys Rai, a former addict, shared his personal journey of overcoming addiction through the Kripa Rehabilitation Program. “Recovery is not easy, but never out of reach. With the right support and treatment, change is always possible,” he inspired, emphasizing the power of resilience and determination.
Civic Police volunteers discussed the rising cases of drug abuse among youth, stressing the need for sensitivity towards affected children and firm action against perpetrators. Seva Kendra Siliguri and Anugyalaya teams provided insights into their child rights programs, sharing helpline numbers for support, counseling, and assistance.

In an effort to amplify the impact of Surokhit Shaishav, Anugyalaya collaborated with the Gorubathan Police Administration to organize an awareness session at St. Francis Assisi School. Addressing the students, Shri Vikramjit Lama, SDPO Gorubathan, urged them to focus on their studies and avoid drugs, alcohol, and negative influences. Gram Panchayat Head, Shri Nima Tamang, emphasized the need for joint efforts between the police, Gram Panchayat, and community members to combat drug abuse. “We must protect our children and keep our community free from drugs. The responsibility for preventive efforts lies with us,” he declared.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Dehat India Team, in collaboration with Malhipur Police Station, organized an awareness rally to spread the message about the growing menace of drug addiction among children and youngsters. The rally, led by the Police Station In-charge and Child Welfare Officer, underscored the societal impact of drug abuse and urged the community to stay away from drugs to build a safe and healthy future.

Aligned with the government’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA), Caritas India’s Surokhit Shaishav program remains dedicated to promoting safe childhood and preventing drug abuse. Supported by various government and non-government stakeholders, the program’s initiatives resonated with the theme “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” focusing on educating and mobilizing communities against substance abuse.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to combat drug abuse. Caritas India’s Surokhit Shaishav program exemplifies this commitment through its comprehensive approach, engaging diverse populations and fostering a united front against this global menace. As the fight against drug abuse continues, the dedication and collaborative efforts of communities, law enforcement, and organizations like Caritas India remain crucial in building a safer, healthier world.
