Uniting Diverse Stakeholders for Sustainable Peace and Development

In a pioneering move towards ensuring the long-term impact of its Samvaad Peace Building and Reconciliation Program, Caritas India, in collaboration with its partner Bareilly Diocese of Social Services (BDSS) Suchetna, recently conducted a series of events in Pilibhit district. The highlight of these initiatives was the establishment of a Peace and Development Forum, bringing together a diverse array of influential stakeholders to collectively work towards fostering peace and addressing development challenges in the region.

The two-day workshop saw the participation of advocates, NGO representatives, interfaith leaders, Panchayat heads, educationists, and media personnel. Caritas India and BDSS Suchetna formally proposed and established the forum, outlining its future activities and goals. Comprehensive sessions were conducted by Mr. Animesh William, Caritas India Program Associate for Samvaad Program on the forum’s functionality and the roles of its members, ensuring that all participants were aligned with the objectives and understood their responsibilities.

“Your career is based on your self-interest,” emphasized Miss Babita Saxena, a senior advocate and CWC member, during an interface meeting between Peace Club children and government stakeholders. She counselled the students on making informed career choices and aligning their goals with their interests.

Another resource person from BDSS Suchetna Vipin Jhonson echoed these sentiments, stressing the significance of early career planning. He said “Your career should always connect with your goal and setting it early in your education gives you ample time to work towards it.
Another key event was the launch of a Peace Curriculum, which encouraged the children to continue with the peace initiatives and take on the responsibility of promoting peace and harmony in their areas while excelling in their careers.

Fr. Derrik, Director of BDSS Suchetna, underscored the importance of living in peace and brotherhood, emphasizing the critical role the forum could play in encouraging a harmonious society. He stressed that we are more Indians rather than posing our different identities based on our religion, caste, and region.

The establishment of the Peace and Development Forum marks a significant milestone in the Samvaad Peace Building and Reconciliation Program, demonstrating the power of collective action in promoting peace, harmony, and sustainable development. As a way forward, participants suggested organizing a follow-up meeting before formalizing the forum.

Caritas India’s Samvaad Program has consistently shown its commitment to not just peacebuilding but also nurturing personal growth and development among its young participants. The recent events in Pilibhit district have further solidified its position as a catalyst for positive change, bringing together diverse stakeholders to work towards a common goal of creating an amicable environment where peace, justice, and development are nurtured and celebrated.
