Caritas India recently hosted a vibrant two-day “Celebration of Volunteerism” event, bringing together over 275 dedicated volunteers from across the country. The gathering, held on January 9th and 10th, 2025, in Kerala, honored the selfless contributions of volunteers and reinvigorated their commitment to social change.
The first day at Wayanad Social Service Society (WSSS), Mananthavady, saw 175 volunteers from various initiatives come together. Participants included volunteers from the Ashakiranam Cancer Care Campaign, Kerala flood Disaster Risk Reduction programme, Covid Task Force, Sajeevam Anti-Drug Campaign, and Barefoot Psycho-Social Support Programme.
Fr. Antony Fernandes, Executive Director of Caritas India, inaugurated the event with inspiring words: “You may not be professional doctors or engineers, but as volunteers, you are the most excellent professionals in creating social change”. Fr. Jinoj Palathadathil, Executive Director of WSSS, presided over the meeting, while Fr. Jacob Mavunkal, Executive Director of KSSF, delivered the keynote message.
Dr. V.R. Haridas, Thematic Lead for Climate Justice at Caritas India, conducted an engaging training session, emphasizing the transformative power of volunteerism. He stated, “Volunteers have the unique ability to inspire positive changes in communities, not only by their actions but also by being role models of hope and resilience”.
The day culminated in a touching felicitation ceremony, where 50 outstanding volunteers were honored for their service. Ms. Cicily, one of the volunteers, expressed her joy: “This gathering motivates us to do even more for society with renewed energy and commitment”.
The second day at LISSAH College, Calicut, brought together over 100 young college volunteers. The day began with an energetic flash mob and street theatre performance, showcasing the creativity of the young volunteers.
Fr. Antony Fernandes praised the contributions of LISSAH College volunteers to initiatives like the Ashakiranam Cancer Care Campaign, Sajeevam Anti-Drug Campaign, and resource mobilization for the Wayanad landslides. He remarked, “The dedication and creativity of young volunteers have made a significant impact on our programmes. Your work inspires hope and drives social transformation”.
A key highlight was the launch of the Caritas India Resource Hub at LISSAH College, where students will lead local fundraising initiatives. Dr. V.R. Haridas inaugurated the hub, stating, “Local resource mobilization by volunteers not only strengthens our projects but also fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility within the community”. A cheque of Rs. 5,000 was handed over to the Caritas India team, marking the beginning of this collaborative effort.
The event witnessed the signing of an MOU between Caritas India and LISSAH College’s department, committing to at least six joint programs annually focused on volunteerism promotion and resource development.
Felicitations were delivered by Fr. Niju Talachira, Director of LISSAH College, Dr. Dileesh Varghese, Lead for MEAL, Caritas India, and Mr. Abeesh Antony, Kerala State In-charge, Caritas India. A signature campaign and volunteer pledge reaffirmed the volunteers’ commitment to social involvement and development.
Dr. V.R. Haridas inspired the young volunteers with a powerful message: “Your energy, ideas, and actions can reshape society and address its most pressing challenges. You are the torchbearers of a brighter future”.
As we reflect on these two days of celebration, it’s clear that the spirit of volunteerism is thriving in India. These dedicated individuals, from all walks of life, are the unsung heroes driving social change in our communities. Their passion and commitment remind us that each one of us has the power to make a difference.
Caritas India remain committed to nurturing this spirit of volunteerism, recognizing it as a cornerstone of its mission to build a just, compassionate, and inclusive society. As we move forward, let’s carry the energy and inspiration from this celebration into our daily lives, continuing to serve and uplift our communities with renewed vigor and determination.
