Pravasi Bandhu Program Illuminates Path for 180 Migrant Workers: Safe Migration, Secure Future

In a significant step toward safeguarding the rights and well-being of migrant workers, Caritas India’s partner organization, Manav Vikas Samiti Chandigarh, successfully conducted a three-day awareness workshop at three different locations in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh. The workshop, held at late evening after the working hours of migrants under the banner of the Pravasi Bandhu Program, reached out to 180 migrant workers, predominantly men, equipping them with crucial knowledge about safe migration processes and their rights at the destination.

The event, organized from February 24 to February 26, 2026, aimed to create a safe ecosystem for migrant workers by addressing the gaps in their understanding of legal and administrative procedures. A striking revelation during the workshop was that a majority of the participants were unaware of the mandatory registration process for migrants, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation and legal complications.

During the interactive sessions, program team from Manav Vikas Samiti emphasized the importance of registration as migrant workers, which not only ensures access to government welfare schemes but also provides a legal identity at the destination. Participants were guided through the step-by-step registration process, including the use of online portals and local administrative offices.

The workshop also focused on pre-departure orientation, educating workers about their rights, fair wages, and the importance of carrying valid identity documents. Many migrants shared their experiences of being misled by unscrupulous agents, prompting discussions on recognizing and avoiding fraudulent recruitment practices.
Another critical aspect covered was access to social security benefits, such as health insurance, provident fund, and accident compensation. Workers were informed about the Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act and how to seek redressal in case of grievances. The importance of maintaining contact with family and local authorities was also stressed, along with the need for safe and hygienic living conditions at the workplace.

Speaking at the event, a representative from Manav Vikas Samiti said, “Our goal is to ensure that no migrant worker is left in the dark about their rights and entitlements. By empowering them with information, we are not only protecting their interests but also contributing to a more inclusive and responsible migration ecosystem.”

The workshop concluded with the distribution of informational booklets and helpline numbers, ensuring that the workers have continued access to support. The initiative has been widely appreciated by local authorities and migrant communities, who see it as a crucial step toward reducing exploitation and promoting dignity for migrant workers.

As the Pravasi Bandhu Program continues to expand its reach, such awareness drives are expected to play a pivotal role in transforming the migration experience for thousands of workers across the country.
