Workshop on Natural Farming highlighted the need to promote demonstration plots for Dissemination and better learnings

To foster self-sustaining climate-resilient agriculture and livelihoods, Caritas India, through its U3 Phase III program organised a three-day capacity-building training program on sustainable agriculture and natural farming. Hosted by Lodi Multipurpose Social Service Society (LMSSS) at Divya Deepthi Bhavan, Warangal, from December 13-15, 2023, the workshop gathered 25 participants, including project implementers, community educators, and a distinguished presence from Caritas India’s U3 team.

The workshop’s inauguration, graced by Most Rev. Udumala Bala, Bishop of Warangal, and Rev. Fr. Inna Reddy, Director of LMSSS, showcased the collaborative efforts of Caritas India in promoting eco-friendly farming practices. Dr. Haridas, Lead of U3 Phase III at Caritas India, elucidated the workshop’s objectives, emphasizing the vital role of demonstration plots in disseminating knowledge and fostering better learning.

A key highlight of the event was the acknowledgement by Most Rev. Udumala Bala, who praised Caritas India as one of the best in the world for its outstanding contributions. Expressing gratitude for the motivational words, the Caritas India team, including State Program Associates, Finance Associates, and Project Lead, actively participated in the workshop.

The workshop delved into the significance of demonstration plots, emphasizing the integration of Community Carbon Collectives, sustainable agriculture systems, beekeeping, multispecies trees, millet cultivation, renewable energy, and soil and water conservation measures. Participants gained insights into these components through interactive sessions and discussions.

Organic promoter and farmer Mr. Hussain set the tone with a state-level presentation, sharing his experiences in organic farming using bio inputs like liquid and solid Jeevamruth, Beejamruth, and WAPSA for soil fertility and crop management. A field visit to the Regional Agriculture Centre of the Government of Telangana provided hands-on experience in vermicomposting and soil testing.

The second day involved a field visit to the U3 project area, where participants engaged with local farmers and volunteers at the Village Information Centre. LMSSS showcased various sustainable models, including organic rice cultivation, integrated vegetable farming, and innovative weed control techniques.

The third day featured sessions by Dr. U. Nagabhushanam and Dr. Dileep Kumar, principal scientists from DAATTC-RARS, Warangal. Dr. Nagabhushanam emphasized the importance of millets in a balanced diet, sharing insights into millet farming, while Dr. Dileep Kumar discussed Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Disease Management of Millets, applauding Caritas India’s dedication to promoting organic farming.

The three-day program, filled with experiential learning and exposure, underscored Caritas India’s commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture and fostering climate-resilient livelihoods through community-owned processes.
