A Journey of Restoration: Kerala Launches Statewide Lenten Campaign 2026

The Lenten season is traditionally described as a forty-day journey through the desert—a time of quiet reflection and personal penance. However, for the faithful in Kerala this year, that journey has been reimagined as a collective mission to turn the desert green and restore the broken bonds of our social fabric. On 15 March 2026, Caritas India, in collaboration with the Kerala Social Service Forum (KSSF), officially launched the State-Level Lenten Campaign at St. Jude Latin Catholic Church, Koodal, in the Diocese of Punalur.

Guided by the urgent and timely theme, “Together for Peace, People & Planet: Restore Harmony and Save Humanity,” the campaign issued a clarion call to individuals and communities alike. It challenges the traditional understanding of Lent, moving beyond personal spirituality to address the pressing social and environmental crises of our time. The message is clear: to save humanity, we must first restore harmony with each other and the Earth.

The launch commenced with a solemn Holy Mass celebrated by Rt. Rev. Dr. Selvister Ponnumuthan, Bishop of the Diocese of Punalur. The Eucharistic celebration invited the congregation to live the spirit of Lent through prayer, sacrifice, and tangible acts of charity. Bishop Selvister was joined at the altar by Fr. Jacob Mavunkal, Executive Director of KSSF, Fr. Vineeth Benedict L, Director of the Punalur Social Service Society (PSSS), and Fr. Michael, the Parish Priest of St. Jude Latin Catholic Church.

In his welcoming address, Fr. Michael expressed his joy in hosting the state-level launch, encouraging the laity and youth to see this campaign as an opportunity for active discipleship. Following the Mass, Fr. Jacob Mavunkal delivered a powerful address, highlighting that the Lenten Campaign is a journey that must transcend the sanctuary walls. He reminded the gathering that Lent is a season to stand in radical solidarity with the marginalized, noting that true spirituality is found in social and environmental action.

The Lenten Campaign 2026 was officially inaugurated by Bishop Selvister Ponnumuthan with the symbolic release of the campaign poster. In a moving keynote message, the Bishop emphasized the non-negotiable need for unity and compassion in a fractured world. “Our faith calls us not only to pray, but to act—with compassion for people and care for our planet,” he stated. “Let us work together to restore harmony and become true instruments of peace in our communities.”

To bring this vision to life, the event featured several high-impact activities designed to engage the youth and the wider parish. A key highlight was the distribution of fruit plants to young participants. This was not merely a symbolic gesture; it was a “Green Mandate” for the younger generation to take immediate responsibility for nature. By planting these trees on church premises, the youth signaled their commitment to building a sustainable future and protecting the common home.

The program also featured a massive Signature Campaign, where youth groups, parishioners, and church organizations publicly committed to the three pillars of the theme: Peace, People, and Planet. Through their signatures, participants expressed a collective responsibility to uphold human dignity and environmental protection. This was accompanied by the distribution of Lenten bookmarks, designed to serve as a daily reminder of these commitments throughout the forty-day season.

A significant portion of the program was dedicated to the Lenten Fund 2026. Contributions collected during the event were handed over to the Bishop, earmarked for Caritas India’s nationwide humanitarian and development initiatives. These funds are vital for supporting vulnerable communities across India, ensuring that the sacrifices made during Lent result in real-world relief for the poor.

Coordinated by Mr. Abeesh Antony, State Programme Associate for Caritas India, with the robust support of the KSSF and PSSS teams, the launch was more than just a ceremony; it was a mobilization of the faithful. As Fr. Vineeth Benedict L delivered the vote of thanks, the atmosphere was one of renewed purpose.

The launch of the Lenten Campaign in Kerala has set a bold roadmap for 2026. It reaffirms that when faith is coupled with shared responsibility, it becomes possible to build a society rooted in justice. By linking the ancient traditions of Lent with the modern survival of our planet, the Church in Kerala has invited every person to become a co-creator of a more harmonious and peaceful world.
