Local Volunteer Network Forming Wayanad’s New First Line of Defense

As the first heavy rains of the monsoon begin to drum against the roofs of Wayanad, they bring more than just seasonal relief; for many families here, the dark clouds bring a familiar, quiet anxiety. In a region still deeply scarred by the memory of devastating landslides, the sound of a downpour is a reminder of how quickly the earth beneath can shift.

But this year, the communities of Meppadi, Vythiri, and Pozhuthana Panchayats are not just waiting out the storm in fear. They are preparing.

On June 4, 2026, the St. Joseph’s Parish Hall in Vythiri became a staging ground for resilience. Forty local volunteers gathered for an intensive, one-day training programme to form the backbone of the HEART Task Force (Humanitarian Emergency Aid and Response Team). Organized by Caritas India in partnership with Jeevana, the initiative is a critical component of the Safe Within, Reconnect Wayanad & Vilangad Project—a second-phase humanitarian response focused on long-term recovery and community preparedness.

The timing of the program is deliberate. When landslides or floods isolate rural pockets, professional emergency services can take hours to arrive. In those critical first moments, survival depends entirely on the people who are already on the ground.

The HEART Task Force is designed to be a community-rooted network of first responders capable of acting before, during, and after a crisis.

The morning kicked off with high-stakes practical learning, led by experts who know the terrain best. Trainers Mr. Anandhan Palapatta and Ms. Shiji Antony from the Wayanad Fire and Rescue Services Department put the volunteers through rigorous simulation exercises.

Participants didn’t just listen to lectures; they hoisted mock victims, practiced safe evacuation routes, and mastered simple, effective rescue techniques tailored for landslide-prone hillsides and flooded plains.
In the afternoon, the focus shifted from rescue to immediate medical survival. Mr. Sanju and the Emergency Medicine Team from Baby Memorial Hospital took over, guiding the forty volunteers through the high-pressure steps of Basic Life Support (BLS).

The room filled with the rhythmic counting of CPR practice, alongside hands-on workshops covering, managing sudden cardiac arrests and choking incidents, immobilizing fractures and stabilizing trauma patients, handling snakebites and executing smooth emergency referral procedures.

By the end of the day, these forty individuals transitioned from worried neighbors into confident handlers of medical emergencies, equipped to sustain a life until an ambulance arrives.

“Proper training can save lives and significantly strengthen community safety,” noted Mrs. Dolly Jose, Chairperson of the Development Standing Committee of Vythiri Grama Panchayat, who formally inaugurated the event. “Equipping our own people with this knowledge is where true preparedness begins.”

The training represents a larger vision. Fr. Alfred V.C., Executive Director of Jeevana, and Mr. Abeesh Antony, State Programme Officer of Caritas India, emphasized that the Safe Within project isn’t just about physical rescue—it is about psychological recovery. By building a visible, trained network of community leaders, the project aims to counter the deep-seated trauma left by past disasters.

As the volunteers received their certificates at the close of the day, the atmosphere in the hall shifted. The looming monsoon season hasn’t changed, but the community’s capacity to endure it has. With the HEART Task Force now active, the families of Wayanad have a locally rooted, skilled line of defense ready to stand between them and the storm.
