With monsoon warnings active, Wayanad Volunteers Train for Flood and Landslide Response

48 community volunteers receive emergency response and disaster preparedness training as Wayanad braces for heavy monsoon rains.

As the Kerala monsoon intensifies and weather alerts remain active across Wayanad, local communities are strengthening their preparedness to face floods, landslides and other climate related emergencies.
To enhance community disaster management and emergency response capacity, the Wayanad Social Service Society (WSSS), in partnership with Caritas India, organised a comprehensive training programme for members of the Humanitarian Emergency Aid and Response Team (HEART) under the Safe Within, Reconnect Wayanad & Vilangad Project.

The training, held on 9 June in Mananthavady, brought together 48 participants from Edavaka and Padinjarathara Grama Panchayats, along with WSSS staff. The sessions were facilitated by officers from the Mananthavady Fire and Rescue Services, who shared practical knowledge drawn from real disaster response operations.

Wayanad remains one of Kerala’s most disaster prone districts during the monsoon season. Heavy rainfall, floods and landslides frequently threaten lives and livelihoods, particularly in remote and hilly areas where access to emergency services can be challenging. In such situations, trained community volunteers often become the first responders.

The programme focused on disaster preparedness, flood response, landslide safety, emergency evacuation, fire safety and first aid. Participants learned how to identify risks, understand early warning systems, communicate alerts and coordinate community action during emergencies.

Special emphasis was placed on evacuation planning and protecting vulnerable groups. Through interactive sessions and practical demonstrations, volunteers learned how to identify safe evacuation routes and support communities during crisis situations.

A major highlight of the training was the hands on first aid and rescue component. Participants practiced cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), choking response and emergency medical assistance techniques under expert supervision. Fire and Rescue officers also demonstrated safe responses to gas leakages and domestic fire incidents, helping volunteers gain skills that are useful during disasters as well as in everyday life.

Recognising Wayanad’s vulnerability to landslides, dedicated sessions addressed landslide preparedness and rescue. Participants learned to identify warning signs, understand risk factors and support evacuation and rescue efforts while ensuring their own safety.

The training adopted an experiential learning approach, combining demonstrations, rescue exercises and simulated emergency scenarios. The programme concluded with a live mock drill where volunteers coordinated evacuation, rescue and first aid activities in a realistic disaster situation.

As climate change increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, community resilience has become a critical element of disaster risk reduction. Strengthening local volunteer networks ensures that communities can respond quickly during the crucial hours before professional emergency services arrive.

The training significantly enhanced the confidence and preparedness of HEART Task Force members, creating a stronger network of community volunteers equipped to respond to floods, landslides and other emergencies.
As Kerala continues to experience heavy monsoon conditions, initiatives like the Safe Within project are

elping build safer, more resilient communities across Wayanad through disaster preparedness, volunteer leadership and community based emergency response.
