His Excellency Most. Rev. Sebastian Kallupura is the new Chairman of Caritas India, announced during the CBCI Plenary on Monday, 17 February 2020 at Bengaluru, Karnataka.
Most. Rev. Sebastian Kallupura, who currently is Coadjutor Bishop of the Archdiocese of Patna is the 12th Chairman of Caritas India succeeding Most Rev. Lumen Monteiro, who has completed his tenure in February 2020.
Born on 14 July 1952 at Teekoy, in the Diocese of Palai, Kerala, he joined Minor Seminary in Palai for Patna Diocese in 1971 and was ordained Priest on 14 May 1984.
He holds a Bachelor of Education from Bombay University. He served the Archdiocese of Patna as Parish Priest in various parishes, as Assistant Treasurer, Director of the Archdiocesan Social Apostolate and Director of the Bihar Social Forum. He was elected Bishop of Buxar on 7 April 2009 and ordained on 21 June 2009. He is a priest for 34 years and a Bishop for 9 years.
Bishop Sebastian is also a Governing Board member of Caritas India and has been part of many state and national level programmes in Bihar. He will take the legacy of Caritas India ahead with his dynamic personality and leadership.
This year CBCI plenary which selected the new Chairman of Caritas India started with the theme ‘Dialogue’. Executive Director of Caritas India Fr. Paul Moonjely presented the biennial report of the organisation and shared that 12.63 million marginalised people have been reached out through dialogue with poor, dialogue with nature and interfaith dialogue. The plenary appreciated the efforts of Caritas India for leading the social wing of CBCI with great vigor and enthusiasm.
