Ability in Every Light: Caritas India demonstrates CHETANA Campaign at Jesus and Mary College’s Diwali Mela

Caritas India proudly partnered with the National Service Scheme (NSS) of Jesus and Mary College, New Delhi, on 15 October 2025 to participate in their annual Diwali Mela – SPARSH: Jashn-e-Roshni, Jashn-e-Zindagi. The event beautifully blended festivity with social responsibility, offering a vibrant platform for NGOs, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), and student entrepreneurs to connect with the college community.

As part of the celebration, Caritas India showcased the spirit of its CHETANA Disability Inclusion Campaign, with active involvement from its Gram Nirmaan and Resource Mobilization teams. An engaging, activity-based stall was set up to promote the entrepreneurial efforts of women SHG members facilitated under the Gram Nirmaan Program.

The stall featured an impressive array of handmade products such as diyas, matkas, jewellery, and traditional snacks including Thekua, Namakpara, and Matthi. Additionally, services like DIY painting, henna designing, and hair braiding — offered by SHG members — drew enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, and visitors. These hands-on interactions not only raised awareness about Caritas India’s mission but also fostered empathy and inclusion through lived experiences.
Student engagement proved particularly impactful, with many actively supporting the CHETANA campaign by availing of stall services and expressing interest in future initiatives. The positive feedback from the organizing committee and participants has laid a strong foundation for sustained collaboration.

A noteworthy moment during the event was an informal meeting with the Convenor of the Equal Opportunity Cell, which opened discussions on potential future partnerships and collaborative outreach initiatives.

This event marked more than a festive celebration — it was a meaningful convergence of compassion, service, and community transformation. Through this collaboration, Caritas India and Jesus and Mary College demonstrated how festivals can be celebrated with purpose and inclusivity, lighting the way for social change.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Abitta Thomas, student leader of AICUF (All India Catholic University Federation), said:

“We, the members of various social outreach activities in the college, see disability inclusion as a critical area for joint action. Learning about the CHETANA campaign has inspired us. We are already engaged in supporting the urban poor through educational volunteering and are excited to collaborate with Caritas India’s efforts towards sustainable development. The possibilities for internships and volunteering offered by Caritas India are particularly encouraging for us.”

Participation in SPARSH has not only strengthened Caritas India’s connection with young changemakers but has also opened new avenues for deeper institutional engagement and long-term social impact.
