Caritas India and Don Bosco Institute empower 100 Youths from Crisis-Hit Manipur with Skills Training

In a remarkable initiative to uplift youth affected by the crisis in Manipur, Caritas India, in collaboration with Don Bosco Institute (DBI) Guwahati, successfully concluded a 3-month Skilling of Youth Program on December 16, 2023. The program equipped 100 youths with skills in beautician services, hospitality, basic computers, and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Works (RACW).

A heartwarming graduation ceremony was held at Don Bosco Institute Kharghuli, Guwahati, on the same day. Fr. (Dr.) Jolly Puthenpura, Assistant Executive Director of Caritas India, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, commending the dedication of the youths who completed the courses despite the challenges back home in Manipur. Fr. Jolly also praised the efforts of DBI’s management, teaching staff, and the Caritas India team for making the program impactful.

During his address to the participants, Fr. Jolly emphasized the importance of humanity and encouraged the graduates to become ambassadors of peace, contributing to making the world a better place. A student representative expressed gratitude for the privilege of receiving education amidst the crisis and thanked DBI and Caritas India for their financial support.

The graduation ceremony commenced with a beautiful prayer dance by DBI students, followed by a welcome note from Fr. Cletus Sebastian, Executive Director of DBI. Fr. Sebastian thanked Caritas India for supporting 100 youths from Manipur who had faced housing loss and educational discontinuity.
The event showcased vibrant cultural performances representing the rich traditions of Northeast India, including dances from Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam.

Fr. (Dr.) Jolly Puthenpura presented certificates to the 100 trained youths, with 32 specializing in hospitality, 18 in beauty and spa, 29 in IT (Basic Computer), and 21 in RACW.

Remarkably, 14 youths secured job placements, with 4 at ITC Visakhapatnam, 5 at Style and Scissors Parlour in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and 5 at Voltage Service Centre in Guwahati. The remaining participants are currently undergoing interviews or pursuing advanced studies, showcasing the program’s comprehensive impact on the lives of these empowered individuals.

The collaborative efforts of Caritas India and Don Bosco Institute stand as a testament to the transformative power of education and community support. In the chapters that follow, their shared commitment to uplifting lives will continue to unfold, creating a legacy of hope, opportunity, and lasting impact.
