Caritas India Celebrates Volunteers in Inclusive Rehabilitation

In the realm of nation-building, volunteers emerge as unsung heroes, contributing significantly to various sectors such as humanitarian crises, disaster management, rescue operations, and the promotion of peace and well-being for the vulnerable. On the occasion of the International Day of Volunteers 2023, observed globally on the 5th of December, Caritas India’s Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Program extends gratitude and recognition to its volunteers, highlighting their pivotal role in community-based rehabilitation efforts for persons with disabilities.

The theme for this year’s International Day of Volunteers, “The Power of Everyone – Collective Action – If Everyone Did. Volunteering Weaves Us Together,” underscores the interconnected actions that strengthen and enliven communities. Caritas India’s CBR program operates in collaboration with more than 600 volunteers at four distinct levels, focusing on supporting the most vulnerable population – persons with disabilities in the community.

Educational volunteers

Educational volunteers constitute a vital force in the CBR program, playing a crucial role in supporting children with disabilities who require educational and rehabilitation assistance. Retired individuals, homemakers, and college students willingly contribute their time to engage children with disabilities in educational activities, teach essential skills, and foster group learning. Their involvement extends beyond academics to imparting values, promoting mutual support, and addressing the challenges posed by impairments on learning.

Mother group members as volunteers

The program also recognizes the struggles faced by mothers of children with high support needs. To alleviate their challenges, neighborhood mothers’ groups are promoted within the CBR initiatives. Mothers without disabilities volunteer to support those facing high support needs by participating in meetings, providing respite care, and advocating for their rights and entitlements.

SHG/OPD members as volunteers

Persons with disabilities themselves actively contribute as volunteers, serving as leaders in self-help groups and organizations. Their voluntary efforts include facilitating schemes and entitlements, engaging in local campaigns, and acting as trainers in capacity-building programs. The program acknowledges the invaluable contributions of these volunteers, emphasizing their role in enhancing the impact and sustainability of the CBR initiatives.

Children as volunteers

Even children, both with and without disabilities, participate as volunteers in support groups. Their involvement ranges from assisting in reaching school to group learning activities, providing socialization through play, and aiding in daily living activities. Caritas India’s CBR program recognizes and appreciates the services of these volunteers, highlighting their essential role in creating a more inclusive and supportive community.

During the International Day of Persons with Disabilities observed in December 2023, Caritas India felicitated some of these dedicated volunteers, underscoring their significant contributions towards fostering a more inclusive and compassionate society.
