The grounds of St. Columba’s School lit up with colour, song and unfiltered human spirit as more than 800 persons with disabilities from Delhi and Haryana came together for Chetana: Empowering Abilities on 07 December 2025. The atmosphere pulsed with energy. Every performance, every cheer and every moment of courage carried a quiet promise of hope.

Aligned with the global theme fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress, the celebration formed a key part of Caritas India’s annual campaign Chetana: Journey of Hope, Share to Serve, which aims to reach 10,000 persons with disabilities through early identification, care, assistive devices and livelihood support. In partnership with Chetanalaya and ICYM Delhi, the event created a space where abilities stood tall and disability never defined a single participant.

The day began with an emotional ability walk, as ICYM youth volunteers welcomed participants with applause and heartfelt encouragement. Their solidarity set a powerful tone. The presence of chief guest Mr S. Govindraj, Chief Commissioner for PwDs, and guest of honour Most Rev Archbishop Anil J T Couto, added dignity and reaffirmed a shared commitment to inclusive communities.

The celebration unfolded through a vibrant mix of cultural expressions and sporting excitement. Skits, group dances and soulful songs by visually impaired groups filled the ground with joy. Games like the wheelchair race, lemon on the spoon race and book on head race sparked laughter and friendly competition. A lively magic show added charm and wonder to the day. Every performance radiated talent, confidence and a sense of belonging.

More than 100 aids and appliances were distributed by ALIMCO after thorough assessment, offering many participants greater mobility and independence. A dedicated job fair, curated by Chetanalaya with CSR partners, opened real pathways to employment. For several attendees, this was the first time they interacted directly with organisations seeking skilled candidates—an essential shift from charity to opportunity.
Nonprofits working with persons with disabilities added strength to the celebration by setting up stalls that displayed products crafted by their communities. Organisations like Blind Relief Association, Chahal Welfare Society, Eco Made and Nedar Foundation showcased creativity, skill and resilience that often remain unseen. Their presence widened the circle of solidarity.
Support from partners such as Confrenza Epscopal Italiana, FAME Foundation, ALIMCO, Federal Bank, Panicker Travels and Rasoi on Wheels Foundation enriched the day and ensured that every participant was welcomed with care and respect. Their involvement reflected a shared belief that inclusion is everyone’s responsibility.

As the program moved toward its close, a deeper realization settled in. The event was not only a celebration of abilities. It was a shift in perspective. Watching participants race, dance, sing and compete with unstoppable enthusiasm challenged assumptions that society often carries quietly. Their inner strength and honesty reminded everyone that they do not need sympathy. They need dignity, opportunity and recognition.
A community lunch brought participants, volunteers and partners together once again. Many ICYM volunteers reflected on how the day reshaped their understanding of empathy and the importance of building environments where every person is valued.
Chetana: Empowering Abilities stood as a moving reminder that when society chooses to see ability, inclusion becomes a celebration—and hope becomes a shared journey.
