Ending India’s 70-year tryst with Malaria

Independence Day Special

“Let us all rise to the occasion to give India #FreedomFromMalaria.@Caritas_India remains committed”

– Fr. Frederick D’Souza, Executive Director

Independence Day provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on their hopes, aspirations, and anxieties for India and the promise this nation holds for them.

Malaria is one of those problems that has been a cause of anxiety for India since centuries but one that presents great opportunity for progress.

For almost 70 years, India’s efforts to eliminate malaria has had successes but also serious setbacks. More recently, over the last 15 years, India has almost halved malaria cases and in 2015, PM Modi committed to a malaria-free India by 2030. However, many people don’t know that malaria still poses a risk to 1 in 7 Indians each year, many of the most vulnerable women and children.

In the recent past, India has demonstrated that if it acts unitedly it can eliminate public health challenges such as polio and smallpox. Let this Independence Day mark a decisive turn in India’s fight against malaria.

Evoking the spirit of Independence Day to elevate public focus on malaria, Malaria No More is sharing this social media toolkit that underscores the importance of eliminating this disease as we celebrate India’s progress over the past 70 years.

As a critical partner in the fight against malaria, your active collaboration in sharing the following tweets and creatives through your organization’s Twitter handle during the week of Independence Day celebration will go a long way in amplifying public awareness about this deadly disease and the Indian leadership’s resolve to end it.
