Innovative summer camp: where children learn to prevent cancer

The Ashakiranam Student Volunteers of Sultanpet Diocese decided to transform their summer vacations to polish their social commitment. Unlike regular vacations, the children planned to work toward cancer prevention and learn to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Two months Ashakiranam Cancer prevention program was organized by Sultanpet Multipurpose Social Service Society her Student Volunteers during this summer vacation.

It was a journey of transformation from one village to another for changing mindset of students in terms of Cancer prevention. This mission specifically focused on the promotion of safe/good food practice and plastic management. A team of Life Skill trainers from Stella Maria College, Chennai facilitated this mission.

600 Ashakiranam Student Volunteers from 7 villages became aware of the danger of fast food. They learned to practice healthy food habits and making more than 70 varieties of safe/good food which they can make in their own houses. The trained student volunteers also practiced what they learned and brought their own cooked safe food into the camp on the following days.

This mission also witnessed the transformation in the student volunteers in reusing the plastic bottles rather than throwing them into the street. These volunteers trained to make more than 40 varieties of crafts out of waste plastic bottles.
