Living with HIV is not the end: A Delhi couple overcome fear with hope and support

When Shahid first began falling sick, he never imagined that one diagnosis would change his life forever. Living in Shiv Vihar in East Delhi, he struggled for months with recurring fever, stomach infections, weakness, and constant fatigue. Like many others, he visited several private doctors hoping to find answers, but the symptoms refused to go away.

Everything changed when someone suggested an HIV test.

The result came as a shock. Further tests at a government dispensary confirmed that Shahid was HIV positive. Soon after, his wife was also tested and diagnosed with HIV. Suddenly, fear and uncertainty entered their home. Questions about health, family, and the future became difficult to ignore.

At first, the couple struggled emotionally to accept the diagnosis. Though their CD4 counts, crucial white blood cells that help the immune system fight infections, remained stable initially, doctors closely monitored their condition. By 2021, both required Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) as their immunity levels started declining.

But what could have become a story of isolation slowly transformed into one of resilience and hope.

During this difficult phase, Caritas India’s Gram Nirman Urban initiative became a strong support system for the family. Through regular home visits, counselling, dry ration support, and continuous follow up, the organisation helped the couple navigate one of the most challenging periods of their lives.

For Shahid and his wife, the support went beyond medicines.

Community educator Sheela regularly visited the family, ensuring treatment adherence, monitoring their health, and reassuring them during moments of fear and uncertainty. Slowly, the couple began to regain confidence. They learned that with proper treatment, regular medication, and emotional support, HIV could be managed and life could move forward.

Another challenge emerged when Shahid later developed tuberculosis. Yet once again, timely intervention, medical support, and continuous care helped him recover successfully.

Today, both Shahid and his wife continue their treatment regularly and are leading healthier and more stable lives. What once felt like the end of hope has become a journey of courage, healing, and acceptance.

Their story reflects the wider impact of Caritas India’s continued efforts in supporting People Living with HIV (PLHIV). Under the Gram Nirman Urban program, more than 600 PLHIV have been brought back on treatment track through systematic follow up, counselling, and close coordination with health departments, ensuring that vulnerable individuals continue receiving timely care and support.

Their journey is a reminder that HIV is no longer a life sentence. With awareness, timely diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate community support, people living with HIV can continue to lead healthy and meaningful lives with dignity and hope.
