Assam Floods 2026: How 1,100 Families in Charaideo Are Rebuilding After Losing Everything

As floodwaters recede across Assam, leaving behind shattered homes and broken livelihoods, emergency humanitarian relief has reached 1,100 flood affected families across 16 villages in Sonari Block, Charaideo District, one of the regions hit hardest by this year’s monsoon disaster.

The Assam floods have claimed 100 lives so far, with hundreds still missing, deepening fear and uncertainty for thousands of families across the state. Amid this unfolding flood crisis, Caritas India, working with support from Donatekart and Amazon, moved quickly to deliver flood relief to families who lost everything, homes, belongings and their sense of security, almost overnight.

“The flood washed away my house and took away everything I had. I was left with nothing,” said Bhuwa Bawri, a resident of Bheluguri 3 No. Betoni in Charaideo, who now lives in a fragile temporary shelter with his family. “Living in this small and unsafe shelter makes me feel frightened and uncertain about what lies ahead. At this difficult moment in my life, your support means more to me than I can express. It gives me hope that we are not alone and that we can slowly begin to rebuild our lives.”

Bhuwa’s story echoes across the villages of Sonari Block, where daily wage families with little or no savings are now facing the daunting task of starting over.

Assam Flood Relief Package: Shelter, Hygiene Kits and Safe Drinking Water

In the first phase of the flood response, 700 of the worst affected families received a full relief package: 700 Shelter Kits, 700 Hygiene Kits, and safe drinking water. These essentials were prioritised for households whose homes and belongings were severely damaged and who had the least capacity to recover on their own.

The shelter kits are helping families rebuild safe living spaces. The hygiene kits are supporting basic sanitation at a time when disease risk runs high after flooding. And with local water sources contaminated by floodwater, access to safe drinking water has become a critical safeguard against waterborne illness in the disaster’s aftermath.

Kitchen Kits Restore Dignity for Flood Affected Families in Sonari Block

Recognising that flood recovery needs go beyond shelter and sanitation, an additional 400 Kitchen Kits were delivered to highly vulnerable families in Sonari Block, again with support from Donatekart. For households where cooking utensils and household items were washed away, buried in mud, or destroyed, these kits are restoring something just as vital as food itself: dignity and the ability to care for one’s own family again.

Together, the two phases of relief have now reached 1,100 flood affected and vulnerable families across 16 villages, combining emergency response with the first steps toward long term recovery.

Humanitarian Partnership Powers Assam Flood Response

This flood relief effort has been made possible through the partnership between Caritas India, Donatekart, and Amazon, showing what humanitarian collaboration can achieve when organisations act quickly and in coordination during a disaster.

“This intervention reflects our commitment to standing with communities not only through the immediate emergency, but through the early, fragile stages of recovery that follow,” said a Caritas India spokesperson. “Every kit delivered represents a family regaining a small piece of the life they lost.”
